For me Weaver is getting a bit short thrifted with three votes. There's a lot of moving parts however. Mercer could be put above him due to Holmes career stage and there's also the fact that Weaver was considered zero chance and not much of a fighter at the time they met. This of course was his coming out party. He could possibly have been the second best heavy in the world from the time Holmes beat him. His wins over Tate and Coetzee were notable before politics and injury stymied his career. I thought he fought well as late as the Dokes rematch. That draw that many thought he edged was a bloody good effort.
Completely agree John. I'd have no problems with Weaver, Berbick or Snipes making the 5 at the expense of either Mercer or Shavers. They're all fine, fine wins.
If Holmes had fought Weaver when he was champion and at his best I would have him in the top 5 possibly. But Weaver wasn't even ranked in the top 10 and was known as the guy who lost to both Bobick brothers at the time he fought Holmes. I definitely think a rematch between Holmes/Weaver should've happened, I believe Weaver was ranked number 1 or 2 for like 3 years. But yeah overall if you're basing it on what Weaver achieved after losing to Holmes then he has a strong argument for being in the top 5 definitely.
Too much Berbick hate. He'd stopped Tate before fighting Holmes and went on to beat Page, Thomas, and win a heavyweight title. Too much Witherspoon love. His only notable win was a majority decision over Snipes before fighting Holmes and he'd go on to lose to Thomas after beating Page (Berbick's leftovers).
