I thought he'd be the obvious choice as the universal consensus choice as no.1 heavyweight bar none of all time in most cases so it stands to reason he's going to be being over rated certainly by those who tend to pick him because they've been told he was the greatest or whatever or know he called himself the greatest etc etc but to just single him as hands down the best and not really considering anyone else as having any shout is over rating him IMO

Yes he fought great fights and great fighters but:

The two fights with Liston stunk to high heaven - one being a stone wall fix the other highly likely to have involved dodgy shenanigans

He lost the most important fight with Joe Frazier (ie the one when they were closest to their primes - at least both in their 20's and IMO undoubtably the best quality fight of their 3 - plus Frazier ran him very VERY close in there 3rd fight too - admittedly both were way past it by that point anyway IMO but still

Norton was capable of beating him - admittedly under tough circumstances for Ali but still at that stage I would still say that was in the better side of his championship years - for instance I class the rematch with Norton as one of his two finest performances for me (behind the rumble in tw jungle)

Norton really won the 3rd too and I think Shavers beat Ali too and Young is very dubious as far as the scoring goes too

So you know, there are names yes but there are issues surrounding those names aswell - plus in between the names there was a whole host of shoddy names - Brian London??!! Karl Mildenberger?! Patterson first time round was fighting with a slipped disk, Big Cat had had hi guts blown out etc then you have in later years the likes of Rudi Lubbers, Chuck Wepner, Richard Nunn, Evangelista - even a 6-fight Leon spinks beat Ali admittedly way way past his best - but still there's a lot on the record to question aswell as applaud

Certainly he was absolutely amazing but so many just see nothing but the good and they mention all these great fighters of the 70's etc but then Ali lost to half of them anyway so what does that say?? I've heard people actually list great fighters listing his great opponents (in an attempt to big up his resume etc) even mention Holmes!!??? I mean come Ali was tortured by him - obviously that fight shouldn't even be used in the discussion but I've experienced one or two mentioning him as far as resume is concerned - obviously that is nothing but over rating or simply not knowing what the hell your on about - but yeah Ali was as good as it gets no doubt - its just that he wasn't exclusive in that

:goodi see what you're saying. i was thinking he fought at least 4 guys who have a case for top 10 at heavy...but 1 of them holmes beat the **** out of him!

in the end, his 70s resume as a whole needs to be considered, not just the wins. even some wins (young, shavers) should be looked at critically.
he's not the be all and end all of boxing

no more no less than the best heavy ever who fought with great success in it's strongest era

This post shows that a case can be made on any position about anyone ... not motivated to break it down point by point ... will just say while an argument can be framed they can all be swatted back with facts ..

Ali beat Shavers and Young. He beat all the men he faced in the 70s. His ring record shouldn't be getting questioned - by a rabid Dempsey fan of all people ffs.

i had him beating shavers....can't say i've scored young.

he had some tough fights in the 70s when he was shot to ****. part of his career, take it into account but he won. does it hurt his overall ranking? Maybe a bit.

the second norton fight for instance is held against him when it was a relatively clear victory. this should be lauded not **** on

I don't know why I keep repeating the same **** on this topic. Ali is the clear number 1 at heavyweight for me, and mines is the only opinion I really care for on the topic. I enjoy seeing people agree with me, but it's pretty petty to be honest. Ali has the best list of wins and looks as good as any one else ever has. Sound reasoning to be rated number one.

Pick unproven fairytale in Dempsey over him if you want Splitnose. Godspeed you ****ing lunatic.

Shavers was robbed, as were Young, and Norton. Ali might have gotten decison in first Spinks fight if all the pressure was not on due to his way of repeatedly keeping title by crooked looking decsions.

In Listons fights, he had a guy like Liston give up on stool once, throw self on floor in rematch. Ali had ton of talent, and was god champ, not anywhere near as great as he was made out to be.

yes he beat shavers, he beat young and he beat norton at the very least in the second fight. the nature of the liston wins are in question, the results aren't.

he has clear wins over liston, foreman and frazier. that alone is ridiculously impressive. add in the rest of his resume and he's the best in division history.
