A bit of talent is needed for someone to have next to nothing at 15, then within 5 years be crowned heavyweight champion. But a lot of it was to do with his power, with his talent serving him well to land with such conviction, and the timing of when he got his shot at the title. Their have been equally talented fighters as Tyson who IMO became champions for the first time past the age of 20. So Tyson's quick road towards glory doesn't necessarily mean all 'talent' and 'skill'. And regards to being H2H the best, thats not all talent either. Duran probably wasn't the most skilled, athletic or talented, lightweight of all-time in the eyes of many. But those same people might well see him as H2H the best in that particular division.
Hi, I am completely ignorant to the brilliance and the superbidity of Joe Calzaghe. So instead I will just list 5 fighters from the USA, or at the very least one from other American countries, whom were based in the USA. Lennox Lewis and both Wlad and Vlad are more physically talented than Tyson. Holyfield is also better in terms of combined skill and talent.
These aren't necessarily going to be *the* most skilled and/or talented of the last 30 years, just a personal list of some of the fighters that come to mind in no order. Shane Mosley: he had/has tremendous physical and mental assets: crazy speed, hard chin, durabilty, toughness, good power, reflexes. I don't think he ever really lived up to his potential. Bernard Hopkins: His right up there with Walcott and Moore (well, almost) as far as crafty, smart fighters go. knows every trick in the book. Roy Jones Jr: If it weren't for the fact that Jones is as fast as he is (or was) and he is technically a human being, I would consider his speed super-human. Never saw speed like his, absolutly awe inspiring. Pernell Whitaker: Best pure boxer of the last 30 years, skills coming out the wazoo, whatever the **** a wazoo is supposed to be. Mike Tyson: His build was unreal, I read that at 15 years old he was 200 pounds of muscle. Excellently skilled in his prime at defense and offense, one of the best composite punchers of all time and devestating speed/power.
Well i can see the way you've interpreted the criteria and welcome your new additions. Tysons been mentioned but mostly via his diehards where as you mentioning him is noteworthy. Mosley has some serious talent, totally agree.
I think a most overlooked guy is tommy hearns. I mean talent wise he was up there with the best of them all. Supreme power, superb speed, super jab, great left hook to the body, outboxed prime ray leonard....What more do you want. Also, ray leonard (number one.) ,prime tyson, prime jc chavez and lennox lewis.
Tyson (80's version), Roy Jones Jr (90's version), Shane Mosely (pre-2002 version), Oscar De La Hoya (90's version), Bernard Hopkins (90-04). Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr get honorable mentions.
