Not the most underrated, but just throwing a few more names out there: Freddie Pendleton Henry Cooper Charlie Mitchell Regilio Tuur Chatchai Sasakul
Mike McCallum was underrated a few years ago. but now he is overrated. He never fought the fab 4 or fab5 if you include Benitez. Good win over Curry and McCrory who were moving up in weight, and Watson was a good win, but I don't see how he was underrated. He never beat Toney.
He only receives rightful credit from die hard fans and experts who frequent boxing forums, but most of the general public has completely forgotten who he is. Considering how good he was, I'd say that's being underrated.. And for good reason. He was never given a shot at them. I'd say the second fight with Toney was a robbery, while the others were reasonably close, and Mike was past it for all three. He avenged a loss to Sumbu Kalambay, beat Julian Jackson and captured a fragment of the light heavyweight crown when he we positively ancient. He was never KO'd either.
He came a little late for the fab 4. They had enough fights to fight to include him. Benitez should have been the fab 5. Mike won his title in late 1984, by that point Hearns and Leonard had titles for over 4 and 5 years, and Hagler for 4 years also. Duran was already a well known guy also. He didn't market himself the best to get the fights. Like I said they had fights to fight. I see your point but you have to say he was robbed in a fight to say he should have beaten him. I didn't see it that way. He avenged Kalambay but he also lost to Kalambay before the Kalambay loss to Nunn. Jackson was not a great fighter when Mike fought him. That was 1986. If the public does not know him like they knew the fab 4 it is yes because he did not fight those high profile fights, but had he won his title in 1980 or so he would have probably been involved in those fights. I know people think he could have measured up to those guys, we will never know. He gets the credit he should, but to give him more means he would have fought those high profile fighters like Hearns,Leonard,Hagler,Benitez,Duran. He didn't. He came a little late, so he fought the guys like Toney,Curry,McCrory.
Maybe not a top 5, but lower weight guys who don't get as much play as they earned Jeff Chandler Mark Johnson Michael Carbajal Tracy Harris Patterson Bernardo Pinango
1. Vicente Saldivar 2. Brian Mitchell 3. Joltin' Jeff Chandler 4. Tony The Tiger Lopez 5. Ismael Laguna Not sure about the most, or if that can even be measured...but these 5 are guys that I feel often get overlooked.
