I didn't think it was a country since I know some people from Scotland and Ireland and if you ask them where they are from, they will never say UK (but noone needs to ask a Scot where he's from to tell). If you ask an Englishman, sometimes they say UK. I know it is a country now though.
It doesn't matter what you think - your passport says what country your from. I could say 'Im not British I'm Cornish' - so, when Cornwall is an independent country its true, not before.
