    Sugar Ray Leonard

    I wont do any order.....

    Muhammad Ali
    Sugar Ray Leonard
    Willie Pep
    Roy Jones
    Sugar Ray Robinson

Ps. I really want Duran in there too but I can only pick 5 + Im not sure Duran would be in my normal top 5 (I have him at 4) if it wasnt for his resume & fantastic career but he would be in my top 10 on talent alone for sure.

then why say 'based on talent/ability'? Just say 'who are the greatest fighters of all time p4p?'. I misunderstood the thread title, I thought it wasn't a thread that has already been done 859 times so far this year.

Yep, we could tell you were up for a good laugh when you included Greb & Langford.
    :D

But on a serious note... if you remove the 2 men with not a lot of footage (Greb & Lang) + the man you joked about (Joe C) then you have the exact same 5 as me so your not that thick.

    :good

Will only choice from fighters i have seen a good amount of footage from

1)Sugar ray robinson- the complete offensive machine, could throw every shot brilliantly, never seen any fighter put combintions together in the same way, knock out power in either hand, great chin, heart

2)Roy Jones Junior - The faster fighter i've ever seen, superb reactions which led to him having a brilliant defence, at 160-68 massive power and could throw more or less ever punch, the quesion mark on his chin stops him from taking the stop spot

3)Roberto Duran- This would have to be a fully prime hungry duran like against leonard and de jesus 3, quite simply the best inside fighter ever, so clever at getting inside and devestating when there, also defensively exceptional

    4) Pernell Whitaker- Great defence, brilliant jab, massive workrate and put his combinations together great, not great power holds him back from being higher

    5) Floyd Mayweather- Slightly controvisial choice and this would have to only be the PBF from 130 no higher, however at that weight in my mind he was close to perfect with handspeed, accuracy, defence, good chin, much more offensive than at higher weights and with good power

HM- Muhammed ali, sugar ray leonard, jose napoless

This is a difficult point for me to articulate. I may become confused and **** it up, but bear with me Pea, and hopefully it will make sense.

I think Roy Jones Jr from 1994-96 at 168 was the greatest fighter ever h2h.

Now, I think this because of his incredible natural gifts of athleticism, punching power, reflexes, and speed of hand and foot...

    ...ie, his PHYSICAL gifts.

I don't think any other boxer in history could have stayed with him and beaten him at 168lbs because of his sensational physical gifts - gifts which allowed him to dominate everyone he fought at 160 an 168, AND be a wonderful fighter at 175 AND win a world heavyweight title by beating a man with a 33lbs weight advantage.

However, although I think he is surely top 10 of all-time on ability, I think the 5/6 I listed were more skilled because they did not rely as much on physical gifts.

Perhaps I have worded my thread wrongly.

IMO, Roy is the greatest of all-time h2h because I don't believe anyone could have matched his physical attributes... but on boxing ability I think there are a few better fighters.

I don't think there has ever been one at 168, but if a fighter came along who fought at 168 that could match Jones for speed and power, but also had the variety and strength and resilience of say, a Pernell Whitaker, then I doubt Roy has the variety, the technical skills, the defensive nous, to adapt and defeat him.

In essence, Roy is the greatest 'plan A' fighter ever, but not the greatest 'plan A, B and C' fighter ever.

This is what I meant by greatest fighter based on ability, ie skill.

Do you see what I mean Pea, or have I came across as a contradiction-ridden idiot??

Monzón would be my number one pick for the middleweight division.

Therefore he surely makes my list. Surprised he is not mentioned more.

That makes sense. Would've been easier just to have said "most technically skilled" from the start though. In that case there are really too many options and ways to take that into consideration to have a simple list IMO.

i'm no expert like some of the book worms on here but if i understand the question correctly i'll say.....

    no order...........

    ali
    robinson
    duran
    leonard
    tyson

the last ones controversial but i honestly think he had the potential and natural talent to be the best ever

It's probably not as controversial as you think. A lot of people around here are of a similar opinion regarding Tyson's H2H talent.

You think Naseem Hamed, a fighter so blatantly limited and flawed from day one who used natural physical gifts of speed and punching power to make a career of beating lesser fighters and then was ruthlessly exposed as the one-dimensional one-trick pony he was the very first and only time he fought a prime great, you think he had greater skill and ability than Muhammad Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard??
