Maybe Povetkin/Whyte 1 for number 5? Old as hell, well past his best but still pole axed a top 5 heavy in Whyte, pretty damn impressive to me.
Weekend was an atg fight but not one for greatest individual performances bar the heart and commitment showed by both which was off the chart.
Fury v. Wilder 2 and Ruiz v Joshua 1 are the only ones that really stand out for me, although Fury showed a lot of grit the other night, and AJ's win over Wlad was impressive for an 18-0 novice with so few rounds under his belt.
Yeah, these would be my numbers one and two also. I guess it's all about what you expect, isn't it? I absolutely expected Usyk to outbox Joshua and so when I saw it, although I loved it, it didn't stun me. Nobody - nobody that I remember - believed that Fury was going to walk through Wilder's punches and thrash him, although he said he was going to do it.
1. Fury vs Wladmir - Total domination of a man undefeated for many years. It's the fight that officially ended the Klitschko era, and started off the new era. 2. Fury vs Wilder 2 - No one would dominate Wilder more than Fury did. Fury out skilled and physically outmatched Wilder. Changed his style to nullify Wilder and obliterate him. 3. Fury vs Wilder 1 - Came back after a long period of time off. Got up twice and dominated the rest of the fight. Was robbed. Insane story. 4. Usyk vs AJ. Wasn't completely dominate, so cannot put higher than this, but a master class of boxing. 5. AJ vs Wladmir - AJ was young and inexperienced. He faced adversity. Hung on and survived, and knocked down Wlad 3 times. No one has hurt Wlad nearly this much after his earlier years before he hit his prime. Wlad was past his prime but still better than most around these days. Would be higher but it was a close fight. I don't think anyone else would beat this version of Wlad besides Fury and Usyk.
Usyk vs AJ is #1. Usyk's win sent such a cataclysmic shock wave throughout the entire boxing world and caused such deep butthurt that he managed to turn the General forum into the Classic for days. There were more threads about hypothetical match ups involving past greats on here than there were over there
Usyk v Joshua was nothing so remarkable. The fight was regarded by the knowledgeable as close to 50-50 going in, AJ maybe a 60-40 fave. Usyk was known to be a more skilled boxer. He won a decision, clear. Good win, slight upset. Nothing devastating.
Ruiz's win over an undefeated AJ was far more impressive than Usyk's win. Got off the deck, knocked AJ down about 4 times, and virtually made him quit inside 7 rounds. Proper heavyweight destruction.
I was onw of those people who was gleeful. I am sick of the "modern heavies are too big" nonsense so i couldn't be more elated.
