Ok but what happens when that plan doesn't work out so well and you have to find another way to win?

 

Wlad's got a hell of a ring IQ. He's lost what, maybe 8 rounds total since he faced Byrd the second time around? Physical superiority alone doesn't do that for you when you're fighting a variety of styles all gameplanning to beat you. A ton of work goes in to making it look that easy.

Having Game planes is not a symptom of Ring IQ. It's a symptom of preparation. The ability to adapt, and be spontaneous (One step ahead of your opponent, creative, etc) within the ring is a display of ring IQ. Implementing a game-plan requires a certain amount of Ring IQ but as an other poster said. Wlad fights basically the same in every fight and has such great physical advantages and a superb skill to judge distance/range that he doesn't have to show or display anything new or different. Notice how I complimented a great skill of Wlad which (With his physical advantages) allows him to fight the same (AKA basic but good).

Either way, in some sense planned strategies is almost the opposite of true Ring IQ. For analogy sake, having chess knowledge may help you beat an opponent but it doesn't mean you have great tactical ability, talent, or skill. True Ring IQ is natural intuition. An ability to adapt, adjust, and be creative in subtle and nuanced ways that go beyond the game planes and strategies. Since Wlad is a safety first fighter because he frankly doesn't have any reason not to be, and since he's not a "natural fighter" as he describes himself he doesn't really a natural knack for elite Ring IQ in my honest opinion. What I've described of Wlad, which is him being intelligent can easily be confused for being the same as Ring IQ. They are not the same. Since Vitali is more of a natural I suspect he probably has superior Ring IQ.

To get a sense of what I'm saying study or look up someone like Charley Burley. In today's game, I'd rank guys like Marquez, Hopkins, Ward, Mayweather, and maybe Martinez or Vitali.

 

Wlad and Steward are more prepared than Booth & Haye, but I would suspect Haye probably has just as good if not a better ring IQ than Wlad. He actually tries more sophisticated things tactically like setting traps. Don't confuse dominance for genius.

Theres 4 and not saying they are a top 4, but they spring to mind. Although I think Hopkins is a clever fighter, I dont think he can change plan half way through so much, just comes in with good plans which he acts out

 

Wlad and Vitali are true ring generals. They know exactly how to shut their opponents down and barely lost a round in the last years, hell in their whole careers.

They frustrate their opponents with patience til they eventually knock them out when they feel like it = Ring IQ
