I don't want to mix 'guest' commentators with professional ones.
Burt was the 'color' guy for the FOTC, I do remember that but, from what I remember, he did a passable job of calling the fight plus...Burt was a big boxing fan.
Howard Cosell? He often said some inane things and...was in love with himself but...as a 59 year old, I looked forward to his commentary on the Wide World of Sports bouts in the mid-late 60's, he WAS a boxing fan!
I remember in his infancy, he was the #2 guy to Chris Schenkel at the Floyd-Ingo third scrap in 1961.
I have to disagree, Howard injected excitement into a big bout.
My beloved Floyd vs. Ellis in Sweden 9/14/68, let's turn back the clock.
"Ellis clearly in charge, the only problem for Jimmy is if he is not able to now end this fight quickly and decisively. Floyd on the attack! Floyd landing cleanly....OH!!! Ellis cut over the right eye! Ellis in REAL trouble now!!!" (with the Swedish crowd going nuts!)
He had many like that. Joe-Jerry 1, among others.
I'll always remember Howard at the Olympics(during the Cold War) sizing up the fighters and then?...."OK, lets look at the 5 judges, one East German, one Soviet, one Rumanian, along with a Canadian and an American...it doesn't look good in regards to objectivity."
He cracked me up and amused me much more than pissing me off with his commentary.
    My $0.02

Cosell was absolutely horrible ... he could set up drama but for actual coverage he knew nothing and would not shut up ...

What about Sugar Ray Leonard, Lennox Lewis or Roy Jones Jr? I don't think they're bad but have they said anything that makes them sound stupid?

I always hated that nasally-twanged abomination named Don Dunphy. Besides his awful voice, he always seemed slightly lost.

Muhammad Ali was 'suprisingly good' as an analyst for the Floyd Patterson vs. George Chuvalo bout in 1964.

Phyllis George did a fight for CBS-Sports in 1976 or so.

During one of the Rounds, the camera panned her, and she was caught putting
make-up on while the fight was going on.

She never worked another TV-Fight again.

    1. Pacheco was the worse. The man should have never been put in that position. He was Ali's ****ing doctor. How does that qualify you to be a boxing analyst?

    2. "The Colonel" Bob Sheridan. Don King's number 1 fan and number 1 suck ass.

    3. Kevin Rooney, Tyson's former trainer. Fortunately HBO quickly discovered he sucked and canned him.

    4. Booby Cheese or Chyz or however you spell it. Couple with Pacheco, the worse commentary team of all time.

    5. A tie between Al Bernstein and Max Kellerman. An ear ache cometh.

I always suspected Cosell may have done "voice overs" on fights shown on a delayed basis on ABC home TV.

The famous "Down goes Frazier...Down goes Frazier" may have been one.

Cosell was not the primary Closed Circuit Announcer for the Foreman-Frazier Jamaica fight......I saw that one on CC TV in Austin.

If you listen closely...you can hear the sound change pitch just about the time Foreman starts really blasting Frazier on the "Cosell fight call".

Cosell was doing voice-overs for the NFL Sunday game highlights on Monday Night Football at halftime....and was very good at it.
