1. John Ruiz - talentless glorified clubfighter who violated rules to illegitimately "win" fights. 2. Luis Santana - like Ruiz, faked low blows to "win" title 3. Leon Spinks - 'nuff said 4. ST Gordon -mediocre cruiser who was lucky to win title by knocking out De Leon 5. Carlos Baldomir - limited regional fighter who got lucky
Baldomir is not regional. He fought all over the world, in many more places than most of the top fighters who are much better than him. Limited, yes. Regional? He fought all over the globe.
I agree with most of these picks, but I think baldomir gets too much hate. He didn't get lucky against zab, he just happened to show up while zab showboated, he was the first man to ko gatti cold old or not. Ruiz have to be second worst as he did beat several top 10 heavies despite doing it in boring fashion. Erik Aiken is probably the worst of the bunch because he beat an old former bantam for the title, is sloppy is hell, and had no heart when he stepped up to guerrero.
Where did the vast majority of his fights take place?? Perhaps I should have been more specific and said "regional level" - as this is essentially what I meant anyway.
In his homeland, as it's like that for most fighters. But he's fought all over the world, I respect that.
Eric Aiken is probably the worst ever. Completely lucked into a title in a fight he was losing, but his opponent got DQed, and he's repeatedly been outclassed by C+ level fighters since then (hell, he got blown out by the white boy that Gamboa nearly killed in his last fight). Luis Santana pretty much falls into the same boat, but at least he had SOME wins against semi-legitimate fighters. Imamu Mayfield has got to be up there. So does Michael Bentt. If you're talking about multiple-time beltholders, Ruiz still isn't the worst. That honor probably goes to Luis Perez, who's been the beneficiary of MANY very sketchy decisions.
