Better boxer/fighter than Langford, skills, cleverness, consistency of results, dominance.

There is no room for perfection in this world.

In other words he was boring.

Interesting .. for whatever it's worth in The Sixteenth Round Carter wrote (if it was him) that Georgie Benton was "always a bit shy under the left titty." ..

dpw- You cannot compare truly the competition Georgie Benton beat
    compared to Georgie Abrams...
    Here's why :
Best win for Benton - Joey Giardello
Now look at the toughies Georgie Abrams beat, amongst others...
    Steve Belloise-murderous puncher
Billy Soose [3 times] a great boxer
Jimmy Leto- whipped great Charley Burley
    Cocoa Kid
    Teddy Yarosz, great MW champion
Lou Broullard- a onetime bullish southpaw champion
GAVE the great Marcel Cerdan a tough fight in MSG which I saw ringside.
And gave Ray Robinson hell in a disputed loss at MSG.
And Georgie Abrams drew with a prime Charley Burly in 1940...
So on this basis I have him as one of the great untitled fighters.:hi:

    Bert,
Let me make this crystal clear!
Never..ever meant any disparaging about Georgie Abrams. I also agree with you on Abrams' record.(Add Tony Zale's name to your list Bert) Skillwise I would take Benton over Abrams...But with that said, Georgie might have a physicality and the know how to overcome Benton. Honestly believe it would be a very interesting fight.
What I took exception to was the reference that Benton wasn't "championship caliber"
With that said, Bert, have a look at some Benton film...He's pretty good too. :hi:

I believe Red Smith and Jimmy Cannon came to the same conclusion.

Benton didn't have the balls to be a champ that's it in a nutshell ,[no pun intended].Therefore he was not championship calibre.

Sweet Pea and McGirt both had plenty of heart,Benton, imo did not possess it to the same degree.

Some damn good fighters on that list. A few that come to mind when I think of good fighters who nver won a World Title are-

    Jimmy Bivins
    Lloyd Marshall
    Charley Burley

Ezzard Charles went 8-2 (3) vs. these 3 but it wasn't easy.

    Harry Wills
    Sam Langford
    Sam McVea
    Joe Jeanette

...but what about more modern fighters like-

    Oba Carr
    Razor Ruddock
    David Tua

So I guess the question is, where would you put them? Are they accomplished enough to replace someone on the list? ;)

Your opinion is your opinion...you're 'too polite' to quibble with Mcvey.

I'ts not only my opinion, it was the opinion of a few boxing writers and an opponent.I've been called a lot of things on here, my favourite being," a cancerous old man," by that congenital liar Mendoza, but never too polite.I must be slipping.:think
