Ferguson did appear twice, thank you, I corrected that. As for his rating, while he was competitive, he didn't really beat anyone of note, except a close win over an early Douglas. Frazier is definitely underrated in general but he has that standout win over Smith and then a few over the usual suspects, Broad, Tillis, Ribalta. The guys ahead of him had similar results and more. Spinks' I found hard to place, limited resume but obviously the Holmes fights. Holyfield has what most ahead of him has, decent wins over the likes of Thomas and Dokes but with less work done at heavyweight at this time and his big wins were over fading stars. I'd be interested in your other musings.
There's resume, but there's also peak. Thomas made it to a higher ranking than Tubbs ever did and was on a KO Magazine pfp list in a better spot than Holmes at one point. Williams also made it higher in the rankings than Douglas did, and his fight with Holmes has to mean something even though he lost.
Here is my revised top 50, I have taken on board several suggestions by excellent, knowledgeable posters, made some adjustments of my own, corrected various stupid duplications, oversights and plain sloppiness on my part, so thanks to everybody who commented. Tyson 1 Holmes 1 Witherspoon 3 Tubbs 4 Thomas 5 Weaver 6 M.Spinks 7 Holyfield 8 Berbick 9 Ruddock 10 Smith 11 Coetzee 12 Page 13 Dokes 14 Tucker 15 Cooney 16 Douglas 17 Bruno 18 Williams 19 Snipes 20 Norris 21 M.Frazier 22 Damiani 23 Bugner 24 Mason 25 Biggs 26 Bey 27 Cobb 28 Duplooy 29 Tangstad 30 Foreman 31 Rodriguez 32 Broad 33 Coetzer 34 Eklund 35 Ocasio 36 Chaplin 37 Tillis 38 Ribalta 39 Ferguson 40 B.Cooper 41 Alexander 42 L.Spinks 43 Mercado 44 Green 45 Racette 46 Frank 47 Ball 48 Gardner 49 Mercer 50
Noooooo you listened to the Tucker haters!! Douglas could be argued top 3 or 4. Him being 17th is very harsh.
I summoned you lol. 31 minutes. Busters win list is just the best of the 80s except Tysons, Holmes and Witherspoons.
But we ain't on about Tucker so you didn't summon anything. I'm on about your bizarre ranking of Douglas he's not top 3 of the 80s under any metric what so ever.
He rated Tucker 7th which I considered underrating but its not a big deal so I held my tongue but some people complained it was overrating so he dropped Tucker 8 spots then I complained he was overrating because Tucker being 15th is egregious. My ranking of Buster Douglas should be the consensus. Imagine holding Buster Douglas's losses against him when you've got Mike Weaver in your top 5.
Your ranking of Douglas is madness he had 0 world title wins in the 80s and never ranked higher than 7 prior to facing Tyson. There's absolutely no basis for Douglas being in the top 3 for the 80s.
There's some great amendments there, well done. When I get time, I am going to argue down Tony Tubbs, strongly, hopefully. I will also take a critical look at Smith and Ruddock.
If Tubbs's victory over Orlin Norris had stood then Tubbs would've had quite a nice little resume in the 80s. Dethroning Page, schooling Bonecrusher, outpointing Norris who was quite highly rated in 1989. But since the Norris win is voided because of the failed drug test. I don't think he warrants being that high personally.
I'm not that strong in the 1980s, at least not in the first half. I think the number three spot is a bit debatable, but it's hard to say who could replace Tim. There are several equally good candidates. I still prefer Holyfield or Spinks at number three, but I admit they don't have enough wins. Don't you think Cooney should be higher? He was very dominant in 1980/81, and his victory over Norton has to be respectable, even considering Ken had already been through that. Gerry mismanaged his career.
