Tyson suffers in comparison to other great fighters. Objectively, he had a short lived prime and never beat another great fighter in their prime, outside of Spinks who was a great LHW, not HW.
Hopkins doesn't have the resume to compete with a lot of these guys, but I'm open minded to his moving up - I think there is a case. Tyson is #8 on my HW list, and didn't actaully make my 100 last time I did one. But I wasn't happy with the 100, so who knows. We'll see.
Jones is a bit difficult to rank objectively. What about someone like Trinidad (not on your list) or De La Hoya (also not there). For different reasons of course. DLH fought a helluva slate, but won some and lost some. Trinidad won titles in 3 weight classes, but was badly outclassed against a couple of times.
Jones is very hard to rate, I agree. Also, fighters like Wilde, Jofre, Burley, etc, whose greatness in a lot of ways doesn't rely on their resume, but other undeniable qualities, such as Wilde facing and KO'ing bigger men constantly, Jofre's dominance, skills, and consistency at his best, followed by a comeback in a weight where the age he made his comeback was considered ancient, and yet he was able to be very successful. Burley was perhaps the most ducked fighter of all time.
No Im serious...he is still fighting???? Didnt he retire like 4 years ago??? (your really killing my memories here McGrain....:hey ) Seriously tho... About Evander. First we are talking the greatest CW of all time...who moved up and became one of the greatest HWs of all time. His resume is stellar...I wont even get into that. At HW, very, VERY few were more skilled or showed more heart in the ring. H2H because of his speed, accuracy, power, workrate, tennacity, heart, chin, etc. he matches up well with most top HWs ever (I think Lewis, Ali, Bowe and maybe a couple of others should be favored over him...but not many at all). He was a four time HW champ....even undisputed (in this era that is saying something...). Also was the undisputed CW champ (and inarguably the best CW ever). Winning his first title only 2 years after turning pro. I could go on and on about Evander. Im so glad he is retired now (PLEASE DONT RUIN THIS FOR ME.... ). As for a spot. I have him anywhere from 15-20...tho I havent done a list in quite sometime honestly (hense for the fluctuation in ranks)....maybe I will work on one later. :good
Got ya:thumbsup He was dominant. If he had beaten Holyfield even once, he would be somewhat higher for me.
Baer's domination as challenger and Liston's domination as challenger are comparable. The sad truth is - Tyson could have been #1 on this list. I hope you understand I don't say this lightly. But the bottom line is - - no great win at HW - mental weakness - one dimensional - no great win at HW In terms of skillset/physicality he is right up there, but the proof is in what you do, not what you got. Best guess? About #120.
Jones is very very tough. I orginally had him a couple of slots higher. De La Hoya was in the 70's, I think, Trinidad around the same sort of clutch, if memory serves. Mrs is looking well.
Evander's only fault is his consistency the way I see it. I personally rate him just outside my top 35, and have had him in the top 30 before I believe.
OK. It's nice that he is keeping so busy with exhibitions for charity and such isn't it? That is very, very, very, very high. I'd be interested to see a list that had him that high. I think he may settle between 25 and 30 for me, for reasons you've stated. As you say, #1 at CW, my #12 at HW.
are you serious?!? calzaghe? what is your criteria btw? where do you put guys like DLH,barrera, morales, tyson etc.
