It was awful.////it consisted of Eddie stalking a fleeing Snipes, who scored enough with timid jabs and generally light punches to earn the decision. Nothing special at all,...just an epic foolish misadventure for Eddie Mustafa.
Gregory was a lazy, weird fighter mentally in general.I don't think he had much knowledge around him in terms of how to properly add and take off weight, which along with his lax attitude killed him around the time of the Snipes and Spinks fights.
Oh Rosenbloom ahead of McTigue for sure. I'm reading up on McTigue at the moment, the Siki fight was a snore fest but anywhere else, Siki gets it. Just my two cent...and I'm Irish! Did anybody mention Tiger Javk Fox? I'd have him well up.
Id love it if there was any existing film of Slapsie Maxie. He's the great "X" factor of the lightheavyweight division.
Did I ask about Rosenbloom? I meant to ask about Tiger Flowers. I did ask about Flowers ya nut: What about Flowers? Bogash, McTigue, Frank Moody, the draw with Rosenbloom...you'd have him above McTigue?
DAMN, I'm dumb! Flowers over McTigue, for sure, not even close, you don't get Mike fighting Greb after 1918/19 when after two ten rounders he was lucky if he had won a round!
Oh, I think it's definitely close - Flowers best wins at the weight are Bogash, Moody and McTigue himself. Have you seen a single source, ever, that has McTigue beating Flowers? I would love to see one. I think McTigue's core wins are definitely superior.
I've re-introduced Miske. Miske is a bit of a beast at the weight, won series with Dillon, won a series with Battling Levinsky. That wonderful 1919 draw with Gibbons. OK, he got shellacked versus Greb and Norfolk and eventually Gibbons, but he is underrated at this weight I reckon.
Making way is McTigue, making MattD the only man to have got a man withdrawn, and a man introduced. It sure is spongy between 45 and 60 though. And i'm stunned by how weak the division is. I did not expect this at all.
Here's what I ended up with: 50 - Michael Moorer 49 - Joe Knight 48 - Anton Christoforidis 47 - Henry Maske 46 - Willie Pastrano 45 - Mauro Mina 44 - Billy Miske 43 - Jeff Clarke 42 - Jose Torres 41 - Sergey Kovalev (I'm aware this is very high...we'll see) 40 - Glen Johnson 39 - Gus Lesnevich 38 - Al Gainer 37 - Bernard Hopkins 36 - Mickey Walker 35 - Chad Dawson 34 - Jimmy Slattery 33 - Joey Maxim 32 - Eddie Mustafa Muhammad 31 - Antonio Tarver 30 - Virgil Hill 29 - John Conteh 28 - Battling Levinsky 27 - Marvin Johnson 26 - Dariusz Michalczewski 25 - Tiger Jack Fox 24 - Sam Langford 23 - Young Stribling 22 - Paul Berlenbach 21 - Dwight Muhammad Qawi 20 - Kid Norfolk 19 - Jack Dillon 18 - Victor Galindez 17 - Lloyd Marshall 16 - Billy Conn 15 - Maxie Rosenbloom 14 - Jack Delaney 13 - Roy Jones Jnr. 12 - Tommy Gibbons 11 - Harold Johnson 10 - Matthew Saad Muhammad 09 - Jimmy Bivins 08 - Bob Foster 07 - John Henry Lewis 06 - Tommy Loughran 05 - Michael Spinks 04 - Gene Tunney 03 - Harry Greb 02 - Archie Moore 01 - Ezzard Charles
I don't know that I would place Charles and Moore in a seperate tier to Conn, Greb, Loughran, Tunney, Spinks, and Foster. Nor place Conteh two tiers below Galindez. Is Tarver better than Muhammad, Marvin Johnson? No room for Fitzsimmons or Bettina? Is Chad Dawson better than Carpentier? Bob Olin lost a lot of fights but he also beat Gainer,Godwin ,and Rosenbloom. I don't want to be negative, it's an interesting idea and I hope to learn something from it
A good list of names. The ones I disagree with the most are in bold type, but I am willing to read input. PS: Joe Choynski and Kid McCoy belong.
I really wish Billy Conn had dedicated himself more to being lightheavyweight king...he would have cleaned out the division and stayed champ until'49 at least.
