You triggered? Dont be mad at me for things you said...you said " trully a murderous puncher"... nobody forced you to say that.. unbelievably dumb...log off and go kick rocks you donut...
I know boxing existed long before Fitzsimmons, but back then they weren't making that much money. Hell, modest boxers don't make enough nowadays either, let alone back then. So it is only logical some of them did something else apart from boxing in order to make end's meat. No, I assume that because boxers are way more skilled nowadays than those 150 years ago. Btw, if that different style was better, they wouldn't have discarded it. As Pat M said, stuff that doesn't work isn't used anymore. He wouldn't be able to land a single punch. He'd look like a fish on land against them, he'd look very very bad, he'd get embarrassed and beaten badly. I don't claim to have watched every single match of every boxer, but I've watched enough of him to be able to form an opinion. He looks horrible. Yes, but it was the HW champion from that era, not a more modern one. Like I said, I have no problem saying a boxer is great, given what he achieved in his own era, but that doesn't translate into H2H ability. I have seen enough matches to form an opinion, they suck.
So you're criticizing his opponents for the phenomenon that happens to modern boxers as well? It's illogical... It doesn't work this way. Fitzsimmons fought with much different equipment and in much longer fight duration. Besides, there are plenty of fighters today that don't fight "orthodox". By this logic, they should suck. Seriously? Do you really believe that a man who fought for 30 years in professional boxing wouldn't be able to land a punch against some random amateur? What makes modern boxers so good? Is it magic? All you need to know is to keep the hands in "proper" way and you'll destroy someone who breathed boxing for 30 years? Enough - in this case means 2 minutes of crappy footage. You must be amazing expert. You could see one fight from Fitzsimmons prime time - the one against Corbett that is cut to few minutes. There is no other real fight available from the 19th century.
No, I'm saying that is even happens now, when there is a lot more money in the sport, let alone then, where there wasn't as much money. True, but these guys still know/have the fundamentals, they just choose to do it their way cause they are very good. No, I believe that he wouldn't be able to land on a top amateur, not on an average amateur. No, it's everything. Modern boxers are not born with more talent than the old guys, but they have benefit of being able to learn from previous generations - they can build on 125+ years of boxing analysis, training, and techniques. So they know what is the best/most adequate stance, pivoting technique, punch etc. They also have better nutrition. That footage tells me all I need to know. He looks bad.
There was a LOT of money in boxing back then. You can't compare economical environment from 130 years ago to what we have now, but boxers were rich people back then. I mean, Fitzsimmons owned a lion once Have you ever considered that Fitzsimmons also knew what he's good at and decided to fight the way that suited him after hundreds of fights? You said before "any decent amateur". All of these are true. Are you really this naive to believe that all of the "decent amateurs" take advantage of thezee things? I'm afraid you have too high opinion on amateur boxers. Meanwhile Fitzsimmons perfected his craft for 30 years at the highest level possible and he was basically peerless at his size. As an old and sick man, he outboxed Gardner and O'Brien - two of top tier fighters of that era. Gardner doesn't look bad at all in limited footage we have and O'Brien was the ultimate spoiler. He also supposedly schooled Tommy Burns when Burns was at his peak and Burns looks very good in footage we have. Again - have you considered that he did some things because they worked for him and not because he sucked?
And if I said so, that does not determine where G-Man should be rank in the hardest punchers p4p list. Two, I said he is "truly a monstrous puncher" because of the title. I'm having a conversation with White Bomber, he seems like he just discovered Merqui Sosa.
