With all the talk about the division, speculations about how todays fighters would do against yesterdays fighters, I put together my own list of the HW's I consider to be ATG's or one reason or another. I'm curious to see who everyone else has. Here are mine: Muhammad Ali Mike Tyson Joe Louis Rocky Marciano Floyd Patterson Jack Dempsey Joe Frazier Larry Holmes George Foreman John L. Sullivan Jack Johnson Wladimir Klitschko
that list suckz so much horsez ass that i cant even agree to reply to the incredable amount of stupidity quite frankly im embarrassed i read that list
Not terrible, but I wouldn't have Klitschko and I'd add Sam Langford, Lennox Lewis, and Sonny Liston.
Maybe this fellow recognizes how overrated Lewis is!!!! Only top level HW champ taken out early by ham and eggers while he had the title!!! The only one. Here's my list 1. Ali 2. Louis 3. Dempsey 4. Foreman 5. Holmes 6. Marciano 7. Holyfield 8. Johnson 9. Liston 10. Frazier
Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Mike Tyson, and of course David Tua. There are others, but they fought before I was a boxing fan.
In my opinion, Klitschko is the first dominant HW since Tyson. He stays in peak condition, fights all comers and still manages to be a good sportsman in spite of his success. Lennox doesn't make my list. I just never liked him and thought he seemed defeatable. Comparing Klitschko and Lennox, Wlad has more fights, a better winning record, a highter KO percentage, has held the championship longer and successfully defended the belt more times. The only things Lennox has on him are: 1. Lennox fought Vitali 2. Lennox avenged all of his losses 3. Lennox beat a washed up Mike Tyson
Dempsey at 3rd? Lewis may have been beaten by fighters he didn't train hard for, but he did beat great heavyweights. With Lewis, you can compare his losses to, say, Griffith's loss against Carter, another decent fighter, like Rahman and McCall. Griffith is still a top 5 fighter though, as is Lewis. It just happens in boxing, with overlooked, strong opponents. It hasn't in the heavyweight division but thats irrelevant, really.
Until those who actually saw Dempsey fight died off, he was routinely ranked in the top 3. He has become very underrated since this time. There was a time when he was ranked above Joe Louis, and this was after Louis's career was over. Lewis didn't just get knocked out by second raters, he was blown away early by them. And no, he never beat a great HW in, or even near, their prime. He's a great fighter, deservedly in the HOF - but he's greatly overrated by many - borderline top ten at best.
