I think there was a lot of sentimentalism where Dempsey was concerned. He was the last if the great old school champions, after being dethroned by modern Tunney, and gets extra marks for that. I don't think these lists are anything to do with head to head though. Looking at his resume, yeah, he might not have lost to weak fighters during his reign, but he didn't beat anyone that good. He avoided his toughest challenger. Lewis fought the best of his era. You can argue they weren't great but he dominated the second best era in heavyweight boxing history. Yeah, Holyfield was old but did Marciano beat anyone better? No. Vitali may not be great but Joe Louis didn't beat a fighter of his calibre. People will always talk about prime Tyson but did any version beat a fighter better than Tua? I don't think so. It's easy to say Lewis didn't beat great, prime heavyweights but then again, who did? I'm a huge Joe Frazier fan but he didn't. Foreman didn't. In fact, Ali didn't either - The versions of Liston and Frazier definetly weren't prime and you can argue because of the circumstances that Foreman wasn't either. At least two of his three best wins, were fighters equally as damaged as Holyfield was.
Carter is one of boxings greatest myths. He was not a great fighter. I don't know if he was better than prime Rahman.
You have Wladdy Klitschko ranked in there but no Lennox Lewis? :blood I'd like to know what the **** that's all about. Klitschko bias perhaps?
And a washed up Holyfield..... twice! And schooled a terrible David Tua! And knocked out a soft as **** Briggs And destroyed a rubbish long time contender Andrew Golota in 1 And stopped out a shite British undefeated heavyweight Gary Mason And knocked down **** poor Tony Tucker twice previously only beaten before by a prime Tyson...
1. joe louis 2. evander holyfield 3. jack johnson 4. lennox lewis 5. muhammed ali 6. rocky marciono 7. larry holmes 8. george foreman 9. mike tyson 10. wladimir klitschko(the one right now)
holy got equally as robbed in the second fight as lewis did in the first fight. Lewis also got his ass handed to him by mercer.
not sure he makes the top ten , but Gene tunney must be higher up than the Klitchko's, he was the first of his kind , and his level of opposition was a lot stronger , put either of the Klitchko's into boxing in the 70's and they would not have made the top 10 , too many hungry fighters with speed . I think we never look back we only see now , and think because a sportsman is dominating now then they must be great . it doesnt work like that.
Thats fine life and forums are all about opinions! To add to your list of things Lennox has over Wlad: Better boxing skills and an all round fighting ability that would see Wlad blown away in 3 rounds if they had ever met.
