How will boxing as a whole be affected by Showtime trying to challenge HBO? Will there be a proper rivalry and will that force the right bouts or keep fighters on separate companies away from each other? Does it mean more emphasis on building stars with shows like 24/7 and Fight Camp 360? Discuss.
Seems to me it could potentially be a great move. Before the super six HBO completely overshadowed showtimes cards for the most part, and with their dominance in a lotta big fights they put on bad fights that would make money. More competition will hopefully make them compete more for our money with better cards.
Hopefully, yeah. I would hope there'd be more incentive to deliver entertaining cards, top to bottom, rather than two **** undercard bouts and a good main event. The only issues that I see are if HBO start to hold back on their boxing. If the numbers aren't good enough, why would they go to war with Showtime over a sport that isn't bringing in the money? And the other fear is whether Top Rank and the other promotional companies can sort out any complications with HBO. In theory though, it should be great for the sport.
i would rather watch top rank boxing with showtime commentary, so yes IMO. i think speculation about the move's commercial effect on boxing is hard to see right now(that depends on whether cbs really wants to back this), but i think the quality of the broadcasts have nowhere to go but up from here. showtime has shown strong commitment in the past year to the right things: stacked cards, tournaments, promotion of deserving(genuinely hungry) talent, and professionalism in their broadcasts. But above all else they're focusing on the biggest thing the sport needs right now: genuinely competitive boxing. color me excited
Anything is better than HBO's half ass advertising and broadcasting. If Showtime really works to get this fight known it could be magic.
Maybe it will get HBO to pay for fight like Marquez/John, Soto/marquez or any fights that's competitive. Instead of paying Berto to fight bums for 3 million
HBO can't pull it's head out of it's ass and yes Showtime with CBS is great for our sport of boxing ..Showtime actually makes competitive bouts that might gather fans HBO pays Berto a ******ed amount to slaughter tomato cans.
Not sure how two top boxers in their prime, undefeated can do bad promotion wise. HBO needs some boxing people on their pay roll. Bradley/Alexander had one of the worst promotion. Bradley also needs to leave shaw. A move to GBP or Top rank would be better. Top rank if he wants a money fight with pacquaio. But GBP would be a better fit if he decide to stay at 140.
Showtime in and of itself? No. I'm convinced the CBS promotion was what sealed it. That sort of exposure is a foot in the door to putting boxing back in the mainstream.
