Top Rank never promoted Rigo properly. Why didnt they make a push for him after the Donaire fight. He was paid 400k with Loma. Loma got 1.2 million. I still think Rigo could clean out 122lb pretty easily, Rey Vargas, Navarette, Roman and Doheny are all winnable fights. Rigo got serious power at 122lb, he can break jaws. I hope with Pbc this new deal he can fight 3 to 4 times a year. Mares and Santa Cruz both ducked him.
While there is truth this this, Rigo also had a few opportunities to shine, instead came up with stinkers. Networks seemed to want nothing to do with him at some point.
He had the ultimate opportunity yo gain fans during the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight. Every fight that night was absolutely boring.
Worst Thread of the Day. Rigo was featured on three televised Pacquiao undercards during Pac-Mania. Rigo was fed Donaire. Rigo headlined a fight at Boardwalk Hall and refused to throw punches against Agbeko (who was TERRIFIED). I was there. People were leaving by the 4th round. Most fighters would kill for the opportunities Rigo has enjoyed.
If Arum doesnt like you and your not a star you are screwed. Rigo was screwed over, Korobov after 1 loss was screwed over. Mikey Garcia, and Miguel Cotto were gonna get screwed but Cotto had a big enough fan base to escape Arum. Mikey was very lucky to get away from Arum and be in the position he is in right now.
I believe Rigo is now going for all knock outs. If he trash talked more that would give him more attention. He needs to start talking **** to get Leo to fight him, I think he would blow Leo out in a few rounds.
Maybe Arum didn't like him, but TR gave Rigo a serious push. He was on numerous PPV cards and got a shot at Donaire. After that TR ****ed him over with the Agbeko fight(long story). From some rumors there seems that Rigo himself was also to blame. I know Rigo signed a lot of contracts early in his career and it caused some serious issues. I think he tried to self manage or was under bad management and got ****ed over.
Mikey walked away from a fight with Gamboa, if I am not mistaken. TR did a good job with Mikey. In the span of 12 months, Mikey fought; JuanMa, Salido, Martinez and Burgos. And then they wanted to make a fight with Gamboa. It was odd that Mikey wanted to break his contract.
Rigo shot himself in the foot more than once. Refuses to throw. He may be a master boxer but $ is in entertainment. Rigo is not an entertaining fighter and after the way he quit against Loma, his fan base (and money) will be diminished.
Arum had a bit to do with that. A guy like Rigondeaux, a safety first counter puncher, who is smaller than all of his opponents, should be matched with Mexicans, and other come forward Latin pressure fighters. That is how you build a guy like Rigo up. Arum instead matched him with guys not necessarily conducive to making it a good fight. Awkward match ups, giant opponents, Cordoba, Marroquin, bigger boxer movers, Ramos, iron chinned boxers, Agbeko. Just saying you can't complain a small guy who is a master counter puncher is boring, if you are matching him with guys who aren't getting after him and making him work. If he could face guys like Santa Cruz, Mares, Terrasaz, Montiel, Arce, Guzman, etc. his career would have turned out significantly different, and in my opinion he would have had a bigger following.
Top Rank did what they could for him. His career never really took off mostly because of his own self-sabotaging. He stayed hooked up with some Cuban mafia guys who got him off the island initially and would never sign exclusively to Top Rank. Top Rank would get him a fight and he'd back out of it. He was just too difficult, wasn't a draw, and would sign on to be an exclusively Top Rank fighter so they rightfully cut him loose.
Mikey was being built up to be a superstar the same as Arum did for Pac, May, and Oscar. He was offered the Gamboa fight before Crawford, and we can assume Arum would have given him all of the same opportunities he's subsequently given to Crawford if Mikey weren't such a primadonna who sued Arum tried to break the contract and then sat out several years of his prime out of spite.
Rigo was his own worst enemy. Not as great as he thought he was now was he. A quitter, and Arum sniffed that out early on.
