your examples ae about what is good for gbp not boxing. what is good for boxing are fights that clear the landscape, and allow the true fans of the sport tosee who the best fighters truly are.
No having Delahoya, Mayweather and Hatton on HBO every week is good for the SPORT! not just GBP. Having Margarito vs Cintron on HBO is good yes, but it does jack **** to grow the popularity of the sport. And like I said, the best meter to judge a card on is by how many fans want to see it.....this is displayed by how much money it brings in. :good
to each his own. if you feel that having those three on television regularly without them facing credible competiton in fights that are simply exhibitions, then you would be happy with the sport turning into a wwf type of promotion. personally i want fights that actually mean something. i personally don't care whether or not a fighter has a large fanbase, as long as he can bring it in the ring.
And your fine with the average person on the street not knowing who Israel Vasquez or Rafael Marquez (2 of the best fighters alive) are??? What Golden Boy is doing is helping with that little problem. The problem that more people know Kurt Angle and John Cena then know Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor. Laugh at the WWE if you want but it entertains a hell of a lot of people. That is exactly what professional sports are....don't forget, entertainment. These fighters do this for a paycheck and the only way to get these fighters paid is to get fans to pay to see them and the only way to do that is to promote them and the sport. That is what Golden Boy is doing.....promoting their fighters and the sport. Doing what a promotional company is supposed to do, and doing it better then Top Rank currently :deal
truthfuly if popularity comes at the expense of the credibiliyt of the sport, i could care less about the casual man on the street. remember wwe is staged, and they can create their personalities. boxing is real and no matter how much you try to promote a fighter without the high profile personality, or popular style, if he doesn't have the talent to pull it off it is going to be a waste.
Golden Boy Promotions started a trend. They started putting their best fighters against there best fighters. They don't hesitate to make the fights fans want, even is it is a major risk to their star fighters. Top Rank is somewhat trying to follow the trend because they have too now, but where were they in the last decade?
a promoter putting two of his fighters into the same ring is no big risk. it is a win win situation. no matter which fighter wins gbp wins.
Tune up fight that is free is a rip off?atsch ***** please! Urkal-Cotto Gomez-Cotto Corley-Cotto as a side note: Cotto outweighed Corley by 17 pounds Defend this baby.
Putting two of their biggest prospects together is crazy!!! Putting two of their best fighters together is also risking the losing fighter's stock. Short term gain, long term fall. But they make the fights fans want to see.
Top Rank is better...I haven't seen GBP promote anyone who isn't a partner in the company. DLH, Bhop, and Mosley seem to sell because of their name not the promotional company.
