I know that, I'm on about from a pure power point of view in that Spinks could get his respect and Saad couldn't.

Spinks was peak and played elusive the entire fight. He got a bit of respect early with a hard right hand but played matador almost all fight showing skills and facets many did not realise he had. He also had a game plan fine tuned to the n'th degree by one Eddie Futch.

Saad was not so lucky on most of those levels. Too many slugfests had caught up with him and he'd been winning on heart as much as anything for a while. Braxton was one helluva fighter too. Saad found Braxton extremely hard to hit and didn't land that much of note. Even when Braxton shipped a right hand he was often rolling with it extremely well.

I really don't think the Braxton fight is indicative of Saad's power.

It was only two years after he won the title. How faded can he really have been?

Maybe I'm being harsh on Saad, I didn't live through that era so don't know how people viewed him at the time.

Check out many of his previous fights. Gruelling would not begin to describe them. His blueprint had become take some rounds of heavy punishment and then come roaring back to eventually win by ko. His fights were wars and extremely exciting. They had to take a big toll tho and when they caught up with him he was cactus.

Most were expecting yet another comeback vs Braxton. Saad was all out of them tho as evidenced by the rest of his career.

I know he had a rep as slow starter. Did Qawi beat the prime out of him or had it already gone? Saad was a favourite for the fight and the reigning champ so it's hard for me to call him faded.

Prime Saad was a trememdous puncher

Prime Qawi had a great chin and, just as importantly, a great defense.

Spinks never seriously hurt him either.

Spinks used clever movement and his height and reach to keep Dwight away.

Saad tried to move in the first few rounds, but didn't have the defense to keep Dwight off for too long. Also, Dwight blocked or slipped almost all Saad's right hands in the early rounds. He also outjabbed Saad at times which opened Saad up for inside attacks.

Qawi did admit that he was dazed by a right hand near the end of the 7th or 8th round of the first Saad fight. The bell rang a few seconds later and Qawi quickly recovered.

Saad stopped Kates with huge right hands
McIntyre, Mwale, Sutherland and Pergaud were all stopped with one punch.

He turned around the second Marvin Johnson fight with a single right hand near the end of the 7th round.

Martin was out on his feet from one right hand and the fight was stopped.

Holmes was 5-1 over Spinks and reigning champ. They all come to that point, eventually. Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying Braxton couldn't possibly beat Saad at his best, Braxton's brilliant. I just don't think he beat the best of Saad.

I thought Saad looked significantly diminished against Qawi,I remember his trainer remonstrating with him, he had a hell of a lot of hard mileage on his clock.

You're not being harsh on him, you don't know his career .. He took a ton of punishment and was fading before the Qwai fight .. He took terrific damage against Johnson to win the title, against Conteh in the first fight, against Lopez in the rematch ... looked beatable against Martin and Johnson .. he was super exciting w a tremendous heart but was a shell .. look at the difference between the first and second Qwai fights ... he was a shell of the shell in the second fight and was never a top fighter again ..
