    Johnson beat:
    Denver Ed Martin
    Sam McVey
    Joe Jeaneete
    Sam Langford
    Bob Firtsimmons
Fireman Jim Flynn (who knocked out Dempsey in one round)
    Tommy Burns
    Philadelphia Jack O'Brian
    Stanley Ketchel
    Jim Jeffries
    Frank Moran

Yeah, 2 of them were past it, 2 were pretty young and 3 were quite a bit smaller. But that´s a hell of a resume that only very few hws can surpass. Having Johnson not in the top10 makes any hw list ridiculous.

I don´t do any lists but rate them by a tier system. My take on it:

    Tier 1: Louis, Marciano, Ali
Tier 2: Jeffries, Johnson, Holmes, Lewis
Tier 3: Wills, Liston, Frazier, Foreman

And he got KOd by nobodies. Having a guy in your top 10 based off old news cuttings and about 10 minutes in total of footage is ridiculous. Of the names you list how many have you watched fight and for how many seconds of jerking, grainy footage? Having Jeffries in tier 2 is insane. The footage available is awful, it is impossible to see how skillful, fast or well schooled the fighters were.

And it in turn makes judging their comp near impossible. What you can do is look at Jacksons record and see that he got KOd by guys with distinctly average records even for their era and the available footage does nothing to dispel the idea that the majority of fighters were pretty crude and wide open. **** even the writers from the time who laud him say one of his genius tricks was catching hold of the other mans leading punch rather than trying to slip it.

Can you imagine someone trying to catch a Holmes jab?

Well, I saw about as many gootage of Jeffries and Johnson that was available, not much but at least something. You don´t need to watch fighters to rate them actually. I don´t count in any h2h when I rate them because it´s too much speculation. What counts are things like resume, achievement, longvity and so on. And to acknowledge that you don´t need films.

btw. what nobody knocked out Johnson out during his prime years 1907-1912? Can´t remember anyone.

To be clear, you think it is INVALID to have Greb on a pound for pound all time list? There is zero footage of him, but his paper resume is absolutley extraordinary. Paper resume betrays how any given fighter compared to his contempories, the research that goes into the individual fights betrays the circumstances those wins were made in, the testimony of ringsiders gives a perspective on the fighter's style.

If a person wants to attempt to compare era's with the tools available, I don't see why that should be a problem.

Consider "catching" and "parrying" to be the same thing.

Can I imagine Johnson parrying Holmes' jab? Consistantly? Yes.

    Yup.
Lennox is the most skilled big man ever, great power, and a brilliant tactician. He wins most head to heads, so he's the g.o.a.t.

I think Lennox is distinctly over-rated when it comes to head to head matchups. Muhammad Ali beats him with his speed and movement, whereas Tyson and Foreman both overwhelm him with power. Lewis is not justified at #1.

A list without James Jeffries should be ignored.
