no i pointed out that theres a differance between 20 and 25

Have ever been to Northern Ireland?

I'm from Derry and the overwhelming majority here see themselves as Irish.
And its the same in every other Catholic/Nationalist area i've been too.

From the information u have posted in this thread it is completely pointless trying to have an educated conversation with you about this

So far u have tried to discredit me and my argument which was based on government statistics

U have failed to determine that information published in the Guardian was not a study they carried out even tho it clearly stated the information was sourced from the Census

U then tried to argue that they were 2 different studies when they clearly weren't

U then took information at random from the study, added 3 statistics together and tried to argue that this information proved your point without actually reading what the statistics outlined

And then u tried to change the original subject of the argument by stating a sarcastic comment completely out of context

Now let's revert to the original argument, is it "utter nonsense" to assume that approx 20% of Northern Ireland consider themselves to be Irish? Given that the national census conducted 3 years ago stated that 25% of people consider themselves to be Irish? Given a 5 % swing based on the fact that there is a drop in younger people in the province considering themselves Irish? And many of the 25% of people originally question will have died over the 3 year period?

The clear answer is no it is not utter nonsense

News flash.... If u surround yourself with a certain category of people u will have a tainted vision on the whole picture

If u lived in London for example and didn't know any better would u think that the vast population of England is white?

U cannot discredit the census u r fighting a non argument here and not looking very intelligent in the process

    And yes I'm from Belfast

right lads thats put this myth to bed... 42% of the population in the north of Ireland vote for Sinn Fein or SDLP these parties are in favour of a unitied Ireland... 48% of the population vote for pro union parties.... the remaining votes go to indepenents and the alliance party [ a cross community party that consists of unionist and nationalist]..... a lot of people are suspicious of the census and the british goverment.... particularly nationalist who will fudge the Irish identity by declaring N.Irish which is a sort of poltical correctness and considered by unionists employers as being acceptable

in other words British establishment/media/unionist employers consider:
    being Irish = bad
    being N.Irish = acceptable
    being British = Good

because of these attitudes its not surprising of the low % claiming pure Irishness

But ulimately peoples true feelings come to the surface during elections when a high proportion of the population vote for the nationalists parties... and on top of this Sinn Fein are on course to be the biggest party in the north, as the next election will testify... i hope this has cleared things up for yous all:good

Considering over 40 percent of the population is Catholic and only 20 percent consider themselves irish you can tell its inaccurate.

Well said. Election is the only "survey" that counts.

One word of caution for the 42% though - be careful what you wish for!

haha I live in London, I've lived in Manchester. I've relatives all over Northern Ireland. At Uni I had many friends from from all over NI from both sides of the community. From my personal experience most Catholic/Nationalist would see themselves as irish. For example most will support Republic of Ireland over Northern Ireland. I personally couldn't care if what nationality someone sees themselves but just find these statistics hard to believe.
