What's alternative about it? These are the all the guys unbeatable for me around a certain weight. I could only pick 10. Jofre for bantam, Harada for fly and Chang everyone below. And yes, on film Marcel is about the best feather I've ever seen :good

    An interesting pick.

    Predictable but interesting.;)

It's very hard to pick a definite H2H number 1 at feathers.

Marcel is a tough fight for anybody, that's a given.

I'd say if Marcel was slightly bigger, stronger, hit a bit harder and had defeated Arguello more decisively

he would have been an excellent candidate for the number 1 spot.

I can see him beating Sanchez, for example.

But how would he have dealt with a physical presence of Saddler or sniper-left hand of Saldivar?

Well he wasn't stopped by Duran really and looked class there.

And I think he did beat Arguello decisively.

By the way, I wasn't having a pop. It looked alternative due to Spinks, Robinson at middleweight, Leonard and Marcel.

Surely for featherweight it's either Pep or Armstrong. Didn't see Armstrong that low, but we know he was like the welterweight version but with even more strength, power, durability and stamina relative to the division. He wasn't just winning, he was ****ing up absolutely everybody.

I like Marcel - one of the better boxers whose name is more recognised today due to the efforts of people like yourself - but I really don't see what he (or even Pep, Saddler, Sanchez, whoever) could do against Armstrong.

I understand that it's only boxers you've seen, and at that particular weight (grainy footage of Robinson perhaps not enough to rate him over Leonard at 147lbs), but some reasoning can be achieved through records.

I have a hard time rating Jones Jr the best at 168lbs, only because it was also Harry Greb's most comfortable weight, or thereabouts, and his record is so unrelenting in its dominance, I just can't deny it. I tend to account for rule sets... Jones Jr may very well beat Greb under current rules but, you know, with smaller gloves, a hectic schedule and other variants, I wouldn't back Jones' long term prospects as much.

Really, Benny Leonard has an equal case to Duran I would say, even though I give the nod to Duran.

Spinks is a worthy choice. I have to remember that a better record does not always equate to superior ability. Spinks had the potential to fit right in Charles' era and maybe even dominate in his place.

Anyway, Armstrong is the choice for me at featherweight and despite Pep's presence I don't even think it's close. It would be an injustice to discount him due to lack of film at that particular weight, in my opinion, when he was a knockout machine who almost literally steamrolled everyone from 126 to 135. Technically I believe his best weight was 130lbs, but he could make 126lbs if need be.

All fair and yeah, Armstrong would miss the cut due to footage only.

Didn't think you were having a pop either just thought you might've assumed I was going on one of my half-troll sessions and wanted to clear that up ;)

I'll throw Maligna into that list but damn, he had some solid ****ing opponents and really good resume.

Cue: "but...but he only fought cops and garbage men"

    No worries.

I don't know why I'm labouring the point, I just feel like I have to get it out. But seriously, Armstrong made mincemeat of his opponents around that time. Lots of early knockouts and complete blowouts of challengers. Twenty seven knockouts in a row. Damn.

Insane. There's many reasons I always have him above Robinson in my P4P lists :D

there was a great espn article written arguing the merits of both at p4p #1. i think armstrong's welterweight reign and resume gets overshadowed by his triple crown achivement.

did he defend against all time greats? not all of them. but he defended a record number of times and knocked the **** out of most of them.

for a guy who was not really a natural welterweight at all and rarely weighed near the limit, it's remarkable

Good topic. Were I a betting man, I'd put everything I had on these guys:

    Finito López
    Jimmy Wilde
    Éder Jofre
    Willie Pep
    Benny Leonard
    Sugar Ray Robinson
    Harry Greb
    Roy Jones Jr.
    Ezzard Charles
    Muhammad Ali

    Lopez? Get outta' here.

Wilde certainly looks great when ill against Tancy Lee. Admittedly Jr shows brief flourishes way past his best getting sparked by Pancho Villa.

I'll say he does show more of himself in the brief footage we have of him against the very good Symonds. And he was incredible as he beat Joe Lynch.

Nah, give me Chang any day of the week over Lopez.

hopkins good win but not great, not roy's fault toney blew it training but he did.

i dont like duran as a pick here, he wasn't at his best way too often to be a good all in betting proposition.

a slightly different list i was thinking about at work:
odds of 5.0+(4/1 or more) and i'd back these guys blind(i tried to pick from the range of guys who would be that price or above vs the top guys from their division)

    briscoe
    barkley
    c. sanders
    benn
    danny lopez
    barrera
    froch
    turpin
    fitz (above mw)
    mccallum (vs jones)
naz (ignoring dumb money shortening naz's odds)
