Why is Dariusz Michaelchewski missing out when Jones and Hill are in their? DM fought and beat the same games as Jones some before some after him, he also was the linear champ, not Jones, and unified three titles just to get stripped from three. If Jones is in there than so must DM. Quite sad you guys are overlooking him.
WOW EXCELLENT LIST!:good - I do think loughran should be above tunney. a 19 year old loughran got the better of tunney in there fight, and tunney avoided a rematch there after, loughran reigned much longer at 175lb over the years.
1. Ezzard Charles 2. Archie Moore 3. Sam Langford 4. Gene Tunney 5. Billy Conn 6. Michael Spinks 7. Bob Foster 8. Tommy Loughran 9. Harold Johnson 10. Roy Jones Jr / Jack Dillion
Maxim was an excellent fighter but I agree that Johnson was the better of the two. Maxim should not be dismissed though. He'd be world champ if he was fighting Tarver...
Okay, after careful reconsideration, I have revised my list, but this time, in no particular order. Archie Moore Ezzard Charles Michael Spinks Bob Foster Harold Johnson Gene Tunney Tommy Laughran Roy Jones Billy Conn Joey Maxim Honorable mention: Virgil Hill
I'm always surprised that Greb doesn't make 175 lists... Has some fine wins at the weight. Kid Norfolk is worth a shout too.
It was an incredible feat for Hearns at that stage in his career. I was contemplating putting Hearns on the list too, but his level of participation at that weight class was insufficient. Hill captured the WBA title twice, had a combined 19 defenses over two reigns, and for a brief period, was considered the best in his weight class. He later took a fragment at cruiser as well. I don't think he has quite enough to be top 10, but he's probably worthy of being between 11 - 15.
Again: why does none of you mention when you are guys like Jones and Hill. He beat the same guys, was linear champ, beat Hill before Jones, unified and the only thing what you could hold against him was not facing Jones.
I have to admit though, looking at boxrec out of hills 19 title defenses, nearly all of them seemed to be against very mediocre fighters. extremeley padded, I mean who in his title defenses did he actually beat that was a legit good fighter outside of Tiozzo?
Forgot Jack Dillon! he goes in with Jones, and I put Tunney bracketed together with Charles,so Tunney /Charles Moore/Langford Foster Loughran Conn Spinks Johnson Dillon/Jones
He was a hell of a fighter though with very good boxing skills. The men he fought did not always have pretty looking records, but they were rated contenders at the time. David Vetter, for example had a record that absolutely sucked ass. In fact, he retired with more losses than wins. But, he was a pain in the arse for any top LH to beat. He went the distance with the best in the world and sometimes upset some of the better contenders. Right before facing Hill, Vetter defeated the highly regarded Michael Grant, in a fight that I saw myself. I also remember Hill easily dispatching James Kinchen in a single round. Virgil won the WBA title by beating a very good Leslie Stewart, and beat Bobby Cyz as one of his defenses. Frabrice Tiozzo, Tyrone Frazier, Joe Lasisi, Frank Tate, Guy Waters, and Henry Maske were all good fighters. Some were highly rated at the time, while others were undefeated in a fair number of fights. The lighheavyweight picture of the early 90's was better than people today know it for, especially for those who had the pleasure of watching the division unfold...
I suppose its true that Darius Michalczewski had a career that was closely on par with that of Virgil Hills. He defeated an aging, but still reigning Hill himself, and in so doing, captured two fragments of the crown, while being a long reigning WBO champ both before and after the Hill meeting. Over the years he defeated a large number of lightheavyweights, former middleweights and future cruisers who I felt were decent fighters. Darius apparently retired with a very respectable record to boot. I'm not sure where he belongs in the top 20 or 30 best lightheavys, but let's just say that his career seems to be an anomaly.
