Melson is making things difficult on himself by hanging in close and trading in the pocket, where Thompson can land the 1-2 downstairs and tie him up. Melson does his best work dropping his weight and sliding back, pivoting and catching Thompson coming in with the southpaw check hook. Melson is able to slip Thompson's jab leaning over and scooting outside, but inevitably gets drawn back into an inside brawl where Thompson is able to chisel at the connects lead Melson had usually built for himself in the round.
Round 6 Thompson is finding Melson with the 1-2 up top now, pressing forward. Melson is very badly cut. There was no accidental foul officially ruled by the ref, although they are clinching and scraping physically enough on the inside to have possibly bumped skulls. Melson is very uncomfortable with the amount of blood flowing into his eye, going into full defensive mode and pawing his right jab as he ducks and backs out. 1-2 by Thompson from long range, stepping in with the left hook. 10-9 Thompson Melson from what I saw took both the 4th & 5th...putting him up 2-1 on my card having missed three...
One commentator, Brian something, has it 58-57 Melson...giving Thompson both the 5th and 6th. Steve Farhood has it 57-57
Round 7 Melson is getting driven back as Thompson works in the 1-2 on the cut right eye. Thompson keeps a high tight shell as he walks forward and slaps Melson on the left side of his face with the hook to get him to open up the vulnerable right side to jabs and 1-2s. Melson dives in and Thompson leans on him. Rough clinches. Melson backs up and loads up on body shots. Thompson now has a cut over his right eye. 10-9 Thompson 2-2 on the abbreviated IB card... 67-66 Thompson on Steve Farhood's... 67-67 on Brian whoever he is'...
Round 8 Very aggressive start by Thompson, running in and cracking Melson with a jab and cross. BIG COUNTER FLURRY BY MELSON, SET UP RIGHT HOOK AND BIG LEFT UPPERCUT. Thompson is dropped onto the seat of his pants, dazed. Thompson shakes it off and returns to work. Melson is using lots of side to side movement, shoulder twitches, full body feints and peppering in light right jabs on Thompson's face. Thompson reaches with the left jab to set up one more big right cross but Melson is moving too constantly and too smoothly to be touched despite Thompson's best offensive efforts. 10-8 Melson Farhood and his co-commentator agree that should be the difference maker in Melson getting a fair hard-earned nod.
Official cards: Frank Lombardi 78-73 Robin Taylor 78-73 Ron McNair 77-74 UD for Boyd "Rainmaker" Melson
Melson is very popular, with a large cheering section. Brooklyn native, and former Army officer (his trunks reading "West Point" instead of his ring name) with an exciting style, willing to mix it despite showing flashes of defensive skill. Oh - and there are celebrities supporting him, giving him congratulatory hugs...including Cuba Gooding Jr. and former NBA star Larry Johnson. He also donates his entire purse to charity, for a stem cell research program. Wunderkind. Now Lou DiBella grabs the mic and gives him a ringing endorsement as the best person and fighter with the most heart that he ever had the privilege of promoting.
Round 1 Hamer keeps his base low as Manswell lumbers in with a left hook and tries mauling him. Hamer sets his feet and fires off quick bursts. Manswell smothers him. Hamer lets more bursts go on separation. Both men are strictly headhunting. Well timed right hand by Hamer - Manswell down! Manswell is up but wobbly. Clinch. Manswell virtually suplexes Hamer down. More clinching. Manswell's legs give out under him. More clinching. Another shove down by Manswell. Hamer catches Manswell before he is ready to resume the action with a huge uppercut/straight combo - and down goes Manswell again! Hamer drops in another two-piece before he can rein in, with Manswell kneeling before him. DQ?? Nope... KO1!!!
