Can't remember if I've asked this before, can anyone tell me how many belts are in boxing today, the total? TY if anyone knows! Edit: oops this should be in general forum, sorry!
There are 5 belts for every weight class. There are 17 weight classes so 85 belts in total not including lineal or ring titles. If you mean how many belts there are in total I have no idea as the WBA have regular and super and so on and the WBC have silver and stuff like that.
Title belts? Probably thousands. World championship belts? Well you have 17 or 18 divisions depending upon the organisation and 2-4 world championship belts per organisation (Emeritus, Regular, World, Super) and five organisations including Ring. I'll say an average of 17.25 divisions and an average of 2 belts per division per organisation. So 17.25 x2 is 34.5 x 5 is 172.5, we'll round that up to 173. So there are 173 potential champions at any given time, approximately.
Sometimes it seems to me there are more title belts than boxers today. At this point, if you are a boxer with over 3 years in the professional end of the sport, with no belt, you probably should change jobs.
TY for that info, exactly what I was wondering about! That is absolutely beyond staggering, I'm speechless.
There are four major organizations whose belts are required to be undisputed: WBA, WBC, IBF AND WBO. Currently there are seventeen weight classes recognized by all four, and one only by the WBC, making for a total of 69 belts. There's also The Ring belt of course, but with a few exceptions whoever holds it almost always holds at least one other belt unless they've vacated or been stripped of them, and the IBO belt but it's in a kinda unique position. It's not really world class and isn't required to be recognized as undisputed, but it's more respected than say, the WBF or IBC or something. I wouldn't count it personally. Hopefully its never required either because it's hard enough to get an undisputed champion as is, and four belts per weight is plenty. Interestingly though, not only will the winner of Fury-Usyk be the first undisputed heavyweight of the four belt era, they'll also be the first person to hold those five belts... assuming nobody gets stripped anyways. Also for twenty years or so the WBA had two "major" belts, the Super and Regular titles, but since August of last year they've been taking steps to consolidate the titles into one, with only seven currently remaining. They also did away with their interim titles, though time will tell if that's permanent or not. Currently there are 44 major belt holders, with four vacancies, seven WBA Regular champions and six interim champions.
Why not just start everyone with a world title belt, then every fight can be an event!! Seems to be the final objective.
The IBO is an immaterial show-piece. It is, and will never be, essential to anyone becoming "undisputed".
