James Toney.... Fought as a Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, and Heavyweight. From weighing 157 lbs to weighing 237 lbs, James Toney was never knocked out, stopped, close to being knocked out, or close to being stopped. He was dropped 3 times, by Roy Jones via essentially a push, by Reggie Johnson, and by Sam Peter when he was off-balance, fat, and old... Because he fought from Middle - Heavy without seriously being in danger of a stoppage, in 80 fights, fighting countless world champions, he is WAYYYYY up there in terms of chins...
Roy Jones never pushed Toney, was a great punch. The reason he went down was because he was trying to imitate Jones and went into that showboat stance, but he wasn't pushed.
It wasn't a great punch. Jones barely hit him. Toney was leaning back, and after Jones hit Toney, he clearly pushes him. Toney was NEVER hurt or stunned by the punch. Not even close. Jones caught him off balance, plain and simple. Watch the rest of the fight. Jones never had Toney in danger of being stopped.
LaMotta is the obvious choice for #1 in my book. Inhuman durability. The guy was a tank. Wayne McCullough is another, actually reminded me of a 122 pound version of Jake in all honesty. Very high workrate, lacking any true power outside of accumulation, and an inhuman ability to shrug off flush shots from the hardest hitters. What a fighter. Obviously among HW's guys like Chuvalo and McCall, But let's not leave out Tex Cobb, who was on the level of the above two in terms of ability to take severe punishment and come right back. And I don't suppose I need to re-mention Hagler, who was pretty much indestructible aside from his tendancy to cut every so often.
Did he **** push him, he knocked him back, Toney kept stumbling back trying to stand up and eventually fell into the corner. Jones rocked Toney in the 2nd round, no shame in that though.
Toney is a bum in many ways...He is a fat ass, He is a ****-talker, He doesn't train properly, and he was a perpetual UNDERACHIEVER... BUT...Name me one person, who fought 80 fights, in 5 weightclasses, from Middleweight to Heavyweight, that was never KO'd or close to being KO'd.... It's completely unheard of...
Jones never pushed Toney, that was a clean punch that sent an off balance Toney flying backwards. He wasn't hurt, but it was a clean knockdown, set off by Toney's inability to cope with Roy's tactics. Embarassing really.
But there was never a danger of a stoppage or a KO... Besides, what did Toney do before that fight? Drop 40+ lbs in a matter of weeks? Toney came into fights out of shape, weight-drained, smoking cigars, eating shitty foods, etc...and with all that, while fighting the best, he was never stopped. That's impressive.
Jones hit Toney cleanly, and Toney stumbled back, Jones kept firing punches and seemed to push Toney with his body. It was a legit knockdown, it was from a punch, but as you said, Toney was not hurt. Perhaps my other wording was wrong.
Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Larry Holmes, Rocky Marciano, Chris Eubank, Hagler, Jack Johnson all these fighters had amazing chins too single out one is too difficult. Oliver Mccall never faced good enough opposition for me, his chin would have got hit more against Holyfield, Bowe or even Tyson but in the 2nd Lewis fight although Lewis did hit him a few times (unanswered) Lewis was scared of being hit himself and was slightly gun shy.
