Which fights have been the most difficult for you to score? I just watched Michael Spinks-Eddie Davis for the third time. I watched it live in 1984 when it was aired on CBS and came away thinking Davis had been robbed. Of course, I was only about a year into my boxing interest and certain nuances were lost on me at that stage. I watched most of it a second time three years ago, but my infant daughter zooked on my shoulder somewhere about round eight and to be frank, I lost the thread of things at that point. This morning I scored the whole thing for the first time and while I had Spinks a clear winner on the cards (116-112) I understand the huge discrepancy on the official tallies, ranging from 115-113 to 119-109. It was a really tough fight to score. Spinks came out strong, flurrying with hard shots that momentarily kept Davis at bay. As the three minutes went by, however, Davis managed to find his way inside and crowd Spinks, landing chopping punches to the champion's body, arms shoulders, and the occasional uppercut through his guard. Davis showed a tremendous chin and a fighting spirit, but despite his ability to bring the fight inside I thought Spinks did the better overall work and landed the cleaner shots. It was a This content is protected to score, though. There were about four rounds that I felt sure about. What are your toughest fights to score?
Spinks-Davis is a good call. There were a lot of rounds that didn't clearly go to either man. How you score it really is a case of whatever floats your boat. Spinks was piling up points with his jab and landing the more forceful blows while Davis was bulling his way in and landing more, but less effective, blows. In retrospect having revisited the fight a few times since I think it's one of those bouts where the challenger gets a lot of credit merely for doing better than expected against a dominant champion when he hadn't been given much chance going in. I believe Spinks did just deserve the W. A fine performance by Davis though.
Essentially any fight where one fighter is clearly busier than the other fighter but the other fighter, although not as busy, clearly has more power and hurts the busier fighter. Those types of fights, of which there are many, are often difficult to score.
I might be misinterpreting what you mean by "hurts," but I don't think it's hard to score at all if the less busy fighter is clearly hurting the busier fighter. Those are clear wins for the fighter doing the hurting. It's tougher to score rounds when neither fighter is clearly hurting the other, but the less busy fighter is landing the cleaner, sharper punches.
