This is 1 way 2 bypass robberies and duckings : simply ask who faced d toughest opposition ? it does have 2 consider d state of d opponents when faced in comparison with d fighter whose opposition is at stake .
    Sometimes , if i mentioned / included a not great opponent , look 4 d gape in age/size/both .
Same case if/when i ommit big names because of age/size/state arguments .

    My candidates :

    HW:

Oleg Maskaev : Alexander Miroshnichenko , Oliver McCall , David Tua , Kirk Johnson , Lance Whitaker , Corey Sanders , Derrick Jefferson , Hassim Rahman*2

Chris Byrd : Vitali Klitschko , Wladimir Klitschko*2 , David Tua , Ike Ibeabuchi ,
Jameel McCline , Andrezj Golota , Ross Puritty .

    Evander Holyfield : Riddick Bowe*3 , Lennox Lewis*2 , Mike Tyson*2 , Michael Dokes , Bert Cooper , Michael Moorer*2

Ross Puritty : Vitali Klitschko , Wladimir Klitschko , Hasim Rahman , Corrie Sanders , Michael Grant , Chris Byrd , Jorge Luis Gonzalez , Tommy Morison .

Oliver McCall : Lennox Lewis*2 , Henry Akinwande , Bruce Seldon , Jesse Ferguson , James Douglas , Tony Tucker , Orlin Norris

    Orlin Norris : Vitali Klitschko , Henry Akinwande , Tony Tucker*2 , Oliver McCall , Greg Page , Bert Cooper , Andrezj Golota , Vassily Jirov , Ola Afolabi , Arthur Williams*2 , Adolpho Washington*2 , Nate Miller*2 , Tony Tubbs , Renaldo Snipes .

    Hasim Rahman : Lennox Lewis*2 , David Tua*2 , Wladimir Klitschko , Corrie Sanders , Ross Puritty , Oleg Maskaev*2 ,

Jese Ferguson : Riddick Bowe , Mike Tyson , Oliver McCall , Hasim Rahman , Ray Mercer*2 , Orlin Norris , Carl Williams , Reggie Gross , Michael Dokes , James Smith , Bruce Seldon , Jeremy Williams , Obed Sullivan , Andrez Golota

Doug Jones : Joe Frazier , George Chuvalo , Muhammad Ali , Zora Folley*2 , Bob Foster , Harold Johnson , Eddie Machen .

    Floyd Patterson : Charles Liston*2 , Muhammad Ali*2 , George Chuvalo , Oscar Bonavena , Jerry Quarry*2 , Eddie Machen , Ingemar Johanson*3 , Joey Maxim .

Each of these men definitely faced a much more lethal opposition than Ezzard Charles , Rocco Markegiano , Joe Louis and Larry Holmes fought .

notice : i also did not include Lennox Lewis , Mike Tyson , Riddick Bowe , George Foreman , Muhammad Ali , Joe Frazier , David Tua (probably because he was avoided) , Corrie Sanders (maybe avoided) .

I may post some more d next time , and maybe other divisions as well .

Have to consider De La Hoya as well if we're doing other weight classes

Ezzard Charles fought ALOT of great competition here are just the HOF he BEAT:
    Charley Burley (x2)
    Joey Maxim (x5)
    Archie Moore (x3)
    Jimmy Bivins (x4)
    Jersey Joe Walcott (x2)
    Joe Louis
    Lloyd Marshall (x2)
    Teddy Yarosz

Fought alot of top punchers like: Satterfield, Elmer Ray(x2), Rocco (x2), Rex Layne (x2), Moore (x4) etc.

Beat over 30 men ranked in the top 10 at the time he fought them. Insane.

great opposition , but usually not heavyweights or close 2 it .
Charles is a top 50 p4p fighter , possibly top 40 or even a bit more , but he rarely fought quality heavyweights near their prime .
Great fighter , not a great heavyweight .

I wasn't aware this was soley in regards to heavyweight in which case I would agree however, him not fighting heavyweights near their prime was not his fault if there is anyone im SURE who never ducked anyone it's Charles.

As for your rating him possibly top 40 p4p thats seriously underrating the man he beat Archie Moore a top 3 ATG L-heavy 3 times, Charley Burley one of the greatest middleweights of all time (top 50 p4p IMO) twice, Jersey Joe Walcott a top 20 possibly top 15 heavyweight twice, Joe Louis top 2 heavyweight (not in his prime yes but hadn't lost in 14 years and was a lopsided descision), Jimmy Bivins a top 20 L-heavy four times, Lloyd Marshall next best of the BMR after Burley beat 9 world champs Charles beat him twice.

In only his 17th pro fight Charles fought and beat Teddy Yasorz HOF who had over 100 bouts under his belt. 5 fights later he faces Burley who had about 60 bouts under his belt beating fighters like Zivic several times, Cocoa Kid, Holman Williams several times etc. Charles beats him then a little over month later fights and beats him again. No padding in his record.
