Sorry if this is a stupid question, but how did RJJ lose and then regain the P4P crown so many times?

Finito most certainly deserves consideration; it's unfortunate that nary a boxing fan weighs "the little guys" (featherweight and under) accomplishments as highly. . .

NOTE: Definitely not saying anybody who has participated in this thread has this mindset, but just in general, the little guys don't get their rightful due most of the time!

Quality of opposition. Jones kept winning, but mostly mandatory defences.

DLH was beating Sweat Pea, Quartey etc. Mosley was a 35-0 LW who beat DLH to go to the top of the listings etc.

No such thing as a stupid question :good

I think it has to do with Oscar beating Chavez, and just his going up and winning titles in weight classes, then Mosley coming up from 135 and beating Oscar, and then Mosley getting beat by Forrest. . .

Jones Jr. remained undefeated during this time, and was just freakish but wasn't quite facing hte level of competition the other guys were on a consistent basis. . . THen sometime around that time period of Mosley getting beat by Forrest, Jr. went up to HW to win a title.

I'm not disagreeing, because the reason I cut off before getting to the Robinson era is because it becomes very tricky, but do you think that Rocky is definitely the immediate successor to Robinson?

Let's say we can rule out Robinson from '52 in his absence.

The same year Rocky and Moore hold the HW & 175 crowns. Can we not make a stronger case for Archie Moore than Rocky Marciano? In 1952 beating Maxim for the LHW crown plus wins over Johnson, Valdes, Olson and Maxim? As well as coming off wins over Bivins, Johnson, Smith et al. Perhaps Moore should punctuate Robinson and Marciano?

    Tricky stuff.

I'm, sure that Fitz, Greb, Leonard, & Armstrong will all feature at some point prior to Robinson. Someone more learned than me will show up.

I was looking at that also, and could agree with you based on Moore's resume.

Also, reaching back father you are going to have guys like Langford that should be included.

Spinks may have had a claim depending on how you view his fights with Holmes. Holyfield might have a brief spell at no.1 as well.

:think Didn't the p4p notion begin with SRR? He was the original p4p king and then it went on from there, didn't it?

Nah that's just a myth that the term was created for him. Robinson just popularized it.

Tony Canzoneri was called P4P the best before SRR.

There's even newspaper articles from before 1900 where Bob Fitzsimmons was called the best fighter "pound for pound".

p4p is just opinions and most don't even understand the original meaning of p4p
