FREDDIE ROACH is pressing for Amir Khan to make his next WBA light-welterweight title defence against Paulie Malignaggi.

Khan, 23, is due to meet promoter Frank Warren to discuss their next move, but US TV network HBO want to screen the Bolton superstar's next fight, possibly on March 6.
It would give Khan mass exposure and his trainer Roach believes the brash New Yorker is the ideal opponent.
Roach says the contest would be a big draw at Madison Square Garden and added: "It is a viable fight and something I'd welcome.
"I like Paulie - and what better way for Amir to come to America?"
Malignaggi was outclassed and stopped in 11 rounds by Ricky Hatton in November last year but a stunning points win against Juan Diaz last weekend has put him back in contention.
Khan won the title - outpointing Andreas Kotelnik in July - and, in his first defence two weeks ago, he blew away Dmitriy Salita in 76 seconds.
Malignaggi's promoter Lou DiBella said: "The fight has the makings of a really big event if we can put it together."
Meanwhile David Haye's manager and trainer Adam Booth has dismissed Roach's claim that he'd been asked to help the WBA heavyweight champ prepare for his April defence against John Ruiz.
Booth said: "When I was told what Freddie said it was news to me.

I think this would be a great step for Amir If he wants to fight next in USA.

That would be a decent fight but will mallinaggi test that chin I doubt it. I think khan would win by points or even a stoppage.

I'm a little surprised that Khan is being made the immediate favourite by so many people on here.

Paulie may not threaten him with any power, but I think he will pose stylistic problems for Khan. He's an awkward opponent, a pretty good slickster, very good speed, a good understanding of how to use the ring, and as far as I know, he comes in the mould of a fighter which Khan has never experienced fighting before.

Don't be surprised if Paulie gets one over Amir.

Paulie has a strong following. I think MSG is a great place to fight.

Good match-up! I'd favor Paulie for this one.

I would see that as a great match-up, maybe not main event in MSG, but a terrific undercard fight. We need more quality cards from top to bottom; why can't this be on the undercard of Mayweather/Pacquioa or Cotto's next fight rumored to be in MSG? Probably the only place this would have main event status is in Khan's backyard...

Paulie is a live underdog, I expect early on khan will have problems with the malignaggi movement.....Paulie has always been mobile, but with sherif younan as his trainer, he is even more mobile....khan doesn't have very good footspeed...Khan is much bigger then paulie, and that could be the deciding factor....

Khan would have the faster hands (how often does PM run into that?), but I agree PM's movement would have him in this fight. If PM wobbled Juan Diaz, he must have a tiny bit of power and that is probably all it takes to keep Khan honest...

Didn't Khan wanted to fight Bradley? Guess Roach is not confident enough to put him against him.

boxing is busines...if he fights bradley and loses then what??? if he can fight and beat paulie then maybe a maidana type then the bradley fight becomes HUGE....three fights equals threee times the money and he would get twice as much to fight bradley....everyone thinks these 23 year old guys should just jump in vs the top of the world or they are afraid or not confident...it is def about money too

The Khan speed is a little deceptive to people....he is a fast with combos....when he throws one punch at a time his speed is above average....I actually think the malignaggi jab is faster then any one punch khan will throw....Khan gets off combos fast....not so much one punch...
