Some good advice there. The OP seems happy with the suggestions and lets hope it works out well.

Of course, my bad. You don't do double negatives in English?

What has the fact that OP is sparing has to do with him clearly writing that he hadn't revived any advice from the coach except the first day?

I figured if he can spar with guys who have been training for at least a year then, at the very minimum, has been taught the fundamentals. I mean, how in the hell can you spar without knowing how to throw the punches, move, and defend punches on a basic level?

I know, what kind of trainer would run such a gym!

I've heard of some trainers putting guys in the ring on the first day to "see if they're tough enough" but that's just completely pointless. I mean, if you got a newbie who thinks he's some kind of tough guy then sure throw him in to humble him but just some random kid who is interested in learning to box then its pointless. From my experience the ones who throw 'em in on the first day are usually the gyms who never win anything.

Stick it out for a bit, ask him questions, he may be biding his time with you to see if you are committed, but it nothing changes , visit different gyms til you find one you really fit into

    Hello everyone!
Wow, thanks everyone for the amazing responses! I truly appreciate all the different types of advice I received and I hope this helps other people who are in the same boat. And again, I apologize for any arguments that happened because of me. (Although I thank everyone for keeping it civil)

To give some more details and answer some questions:

No and I honestly don't think anyone there is competing besides kids. The people I've asked all said no. I did mention that there were a few "pros" based on the website but I've honestly never seen more than 2 and I only met them once. The other members are just regular people with regular day jobs that have been boxing for a while.

Yeah, it was a little odd when he just threw me in there, knowing that even my form wasn't good. Granted the other guy that was sparring with me was taking it easy but I really didn't feel comfortable. (although I tried to convince myself that sometimes you gotta get out of your comfort zone..)

Ironically, the other day, that same guy did mitts with me and showed me some things, told me not to hurry to do sparring and should concentrate the basics first. So I'm guessing sparring isn't something you should do right away and was just a crazy idea from the owner...

But these past few days, I gotta admit, have been pretty nice. After clearing my head a bit for a few days and reflecting on everyone's great comments, I think my attitude changed a bit. I mean, the owner is still crap and doesn't say much to me, but the people there are really nice and well, granted they're not pros, but they really are helping me with everything, from my stance to my jabs/straight/hooks. I feel like I've been improving but still am keeping my eyes open for other gyms just in case. And like I said before, when there are people, it's not so bad but when I'm by myself...that's where the problem lies.. But will try to approach the owner next time just to see his reaction. And I think there may be some truth to what Mr.DagoWop. Maybe the owner just wants to see if I'm committed or not (although I don't agree with that reasoning/treatment) But I do agree that I have to make the best of it.

And PIRA, thanks a lot! I wish all gyms were like the ones you have around your area!

This really is the closest gym to me so after going for 2 months, it became more of a convenience more than anything. I wish there were closer gyms around but as of now, I'm stuck here. For now, I'll stick it out and again, keep my eyes and ears open just in case.

In any case though, I will not and never give up on boxing which is the sport I love, no matter the circumstances.

Thanks again for the amazing responses! You guys are always welcome to comment :)

    Keep boxing!!

From what you're saying here, it sounds like this isn't the right place to be training for competing in boxing.
Perhaps talk to the coach, as there's nothing to lose. But if there isn't a bubbling competitive presence at the gym, move on (imo).

Best wishes for your boxing, hope it goes well. If I assume correct your are in Japan - if so maybe check out the local MMA / K1 gyms on the net and give them a call, most good K-1 or MMA gym's have a quality boxing trainer / pro on staff and you can usually do sole member ships - not quite a "boxing gym" in the traditional sense but an excellent option IMO.

A lot of of Muay Thai guys when they are off team do boxing and the Muay Thai guys are always doing boxing classes to polish up their hands for Western judged fights.
