That is an excuse. He went into sparring mode enough to put him nicely behind on the cards because he was getting outworked. His game lacked consistency. Ola has some good potential due to his characater and toughness but his game needs some real work because his approach will fail against a high level consistent fighter like Adamek for example.
The guy is a sparring partner!! He's entire career has NEVER been consistent. This is a guy that has served as a quality sparring partner for alot of heavies including the Klitcshko's. Excuse or not it was evident Olu was not brought there to win. Enzo would have seen he's record and assumed the guy was a gimme. This he certainly did as he confirmed it himself after the fight. Look at how he changed from the first early rounds when he toyed with Enzo to the 4th and onward where he simply took time off for the next 6 rounds or so? Either that or it was the rope a dope ploy where he simply allowed Enzo to tire out.
So what if he is a sparring partner. The guys had about 20 fights, a host of sparring and probably some amateur bouts. It doesn't detract from his inconsistent workrate. He was prepared for this fight, has been in the wild card gym with Freddie Roach so there is no excuses for what he showed that night. Even if he is a sparring partner, its not his job to get hit. Even if he was picked to lose, he didn't fight like it so that is irrelavent. Ola's workrate was inconsistent. Sometimes he looked great and then he'd take too much time off. When he lost 6 rounds or so, he got tired himself and you could see Enzos body work taking it's toll. Ola won so credit to him but Enzo messed up his chances big time. That was a winnable fight. Ola is not James Toney and Enzo can perform better than that. No doubt about it.
Finally some words of sense. People are getting way too carried away with this lad. Haven't seen such frenzy for a while.
Enzo's still a young guy, he can still do something. he could move on and learn to actually box, every he does is so upright and basic. The reason for this is he's got a massive punch so he's been spoonfed ko victims by Warren throughout. I think he should take a couple of steps back, switch trainers, go for the European or even the british title and buid himself back up slowly. Go back to the drawing board and learn some new tricks.
Yep.Ronald McDonald could have trained Joe to the same effect. Gibberish speaker of the year, but not trainer.
I dont think Enzo Calzaghe is a great trainer but he dont deserve all the stick he is getting. He guided Enzo to a world title and Gav Rees,Brad Price had been doing very well untill Saturday and obviosly there was Joe. He got the trainer of the year award because all his fighters were wining and i think he deserved it.After Saturday the gym must be a depressing place to be in Newbridge.I was never a big fan of Joe or his dad but i have to say i think they have both done well.I am a big supporter of british fighters and like to see a team all based in the uk doing well.I hope the guys at Newbridge learn from thier mistakes and can bounce back.Im sure nobody is more dissapointed than Enzo himself and he will be more than ready to take his share of any blame.
Guided Ree's to what? Ree's got the fight with M`baye who won the vacant WBA as that was Warrens way of preventing Ricky from fighting for the belt. Subsequently because both men are promoted by Warren he was given a totally unwarranted title shot that cheapend the title even more, bearing in mind Ree's career to that date didnt even consist of ANY domestic titles. Matter of fact he had fought no one any note. He's was nothing more than lavish fortune as is the Warren nicely guided way. If Enzo was doing he's job Ree's would be back at featherweight instead of flirting with boxing and coming in the ring looking like a podgy light welter. The same goes for Enzo Mac. You actually believe he guided him to a world title? Do you really believe Bobby Gunn and the WBU was the correct route to a world title? Enzo's camp apart from Joe all enjoyed nothing more than very good fortune.
Lets face it, Team calzaghe was alll about Joe Calzaghe, Enzo only picked up the training when he realised how good Joe was.
I think both Rees and Big Enz have done well under Calzaghe, they both won world titles and you are just splitting hairs.Rees is fighting at that weight cos people are ducking him at the lower weights. And Enzo will rule again as world champ despite what happend on Saturday.
I'd say that there are glaring errors in the camp, and in the way the boxers there are guided. Pryce made so little career progress while he was a champion. Enzo gets chinned by a unknown and rees hasn't even contested a domestic title since losing his world title. Enzo c's story is a gr8 one which prob explains his selection, but a great trainer would guide his fighters correctly, ensure they were motivated. Let's be real here rees, pryce and macca are a seriously talented trio- they should not be performing as badly as this. Anyone who can't see that is daft.
