I feel when a fighter wins, the trainer gets too much credit. There is no best trainer, most people who have boxing experience has good knowledge, but it all depends on how you connect with your fighter and not all boxing trainers have the best communication skills. Some trainers never even had boxing experience, yet their fighters are doing incredibly well for being brought upon some one with no boxing experience. Of course, there are exceptions. Some pairs (fighter and trainer) just have a natural chemistry that allows them to work better and understand each other easily. What do you guys think?
You made a great point and i think that as well to a certain extent.. Simply put, regardless of how great the trainer may be, if they lack chemistry with the fighter and if the fighter is incapable of performing up to the level, it's all for nothing... It mostly depends on the fighter and how well he can execute.. Professor Ignacio Beristain is my favorite trainer of all times BTW and his chemistry with Marquez is just untouchable... They make the greatest combo ever... Roach is overrated.. Joe Goosen is better than him in reality..
Writers who cover boxing often talk to trainers. They have to have something to write about, and can only interview fighters so many times. Some trainers are interesting, some get too much attention. I don't think Angelo Dundee ever turned down an interview, same for Ray Arcel. Dundee was the beteer trainer, Arcel good cornermen. FreddieBrown trained a lot of Arcels fighters, especially Duran. Freddie Brown had nothing to say, so Arcel got credit inordinate amount of credit for Duran's success. Human interest angle gets attention (Freddie Roach battling Parkinson's) Roach is great trainer though. The late Gil Clancy was average, but recognized more as great due to his friendship with so many reporters. Teddy Atlas took it to a ridiculous level, lousy trainer, sucks as one, yet is friends with not only boxing reporters, but with writers and media people they want to be friends with. Atlas made rep through being friends with Pete Hamiill, Norman Mailer, and others, more than anything he did with any fighter. Some people actually think he trained Tyson as much as Rooney and D'Amato. Mayweather is good/great trainer, can't talk for ****, and has little patience for reporters. So he gets less press attention than Roach. Both are close to equal, yet Roach gets more attention. If Roach was awful interview, or gave reporters brush off, and mayawehter was articulate and talked more to media , it would be other way around.
