Trainers: Lucky Or Genius

You can add Vivian Harris and Naseem Hamed to that list, both very talented, Hamed regressed under Steward

 

people always think emmanuel steward is a great fit, absurdly irritating. the guy is great at teaching good distance boxing and straight punching but apart from that he is very limited, i never see his fighters displaying really impressive defensive skills and none of them can infight. I dont like what he does with Cotto either

very overrated

 

I think there have always been plenty of very good trainers out there.
But most of them never get a greatly talented and driven fighter, so in that respect there's a great amount of luck.
And many of the guys who get a greatly talented and driven fighter tend to get a reputation, and other fighters of that ilk will come to them.

Also, many of these very good trainers are mature men with families and wives, and more often than not they have a love for their home community ... they dont necessarily have any great ambition to be rushing all over the world looking for talent to train. They stay local.


It's hard to credit a trainer with genius just because he worked with a lot of great fighters. Unless you are there behind closed doors with them, you don't know exactly who is doing what.
Often these "genius" trainers have a team of assistants. Just like "genius" film directors might use the same assistant director, cinematographer, and editor every film !

 

Well, there has always been the debate as to whether the fighter makes the trainer or the trainer makes the fighter.
Lately, I've gotten to thinking the fighter makes the trainer.

 

Roach is definitely lucky to have got on the coat tails of so many successful boxers. He is great at conditioning boxers and teaching basics but his boxers are severely limited

 

On the other hand Khan for example improved under Roach's tutelage from an unstable British-level fighter to the world class fighter.

Although "Sugar Duran" Linares fought a few dissapointing fights recently.
