    Hi guys,

I'm currently working towards a long term goal of competing in an MMA fight. I've trained 2x a week in BJJ for a year and a half, and I do strength&conditioning 3x a week (freeweights & roadwork). Additionally, for 3 months I've trained boxing 1x a week (my MMA gym only offers one boxing class). I plan on continuing this training for another 3.5 yrs before doing my first MMA fight (purple belt in BJJ + several years of striking training).

Anyway, I'm starting to enjoy boxing a lot. I'm thinking I might like to do a few amateur boxing matches before I do an MMA fight (this was recommended to me by an MMA trainer -- along with doing BJJ tournaments -- to get used to the pressure, etc.) Obviously the bad news is I only train 1x a week, but the good news is, I stay active the rest of the week (conditioning), and, our boxing instructor is really good (local golden gloves winner etc.)

Anyway, I realize that I probably won't ever be an above-average boxer due to my training schedule, but do you think I can eventually do a few amateur fights, having trained this way for a year or so? Is there anything else I could do at home, without a heavybag? (besides the roadwork).... I do have an Everlast training DVD, which has a (challenging) 10 min shadowboxing routine, should I try to work this in every week as well?

shadowboxing in front of a mirror is defenitly essential, so you can see where you are open a such. Do you have a friend/family member who could do glove drills with you to practice your combos? All you need is 2 pair of gloves and you can work your combo while he blocks.

I think the everlast dvd will cover most of your needs though.

If youwant to compete in an amatuer boxing match, you have to train in boxing for more than one day a week. Remember your opponent is probably training five to six days a week. Also in a boxing match obviously you cant use MMA moves on the other guys, only boxing, so you really need to devote more time to your boxing training if you want to compete. Not telling you to give up MMA, just to keep what I said in mind. Good luck with things.

I realize that's "old" to start boxing, but better late then never :) Besides I hate excuses, I'm not going to use my age as a reason to not begin or compete.
