Chappie Blackburn for Joe Louis, Charley Goldman for Marciano,George Gainford for SSR, Dundee for Ali and Leonard, Gil Clancey for Griffith , Ray Arcel and Freddie Brown for Duran. Freddie Brown was a real master, Eddie Futch also......Who are the masters today...I have seen success from Roach,Steward,Benton, but are any of these guys Ring Masters......Is there 1, are there more...who today qualify's and can you pick a top 3 or 5...Thoughts
Berestein is probably the best out there & has been for awhile. Sdunek had that reall good run for awhile w/ klitschko's, michalczewski, gregorian. But this skill has turned into the endangered species list as far as top shelf trainers that you would grade as an A.
I would say Emanuel Steward. He trained Thomas Hearns and Lennox Lewis, and dramaticaly improved Wladimir Klitschko.
I agree. In addition to those, he made Michael Moorer and Gerald McClellan from rough diamonds into well trained and skilled boxers. They didn't achieve their biggest achievements when they were with him, though. Roach is excellent too. Sdunek deserves a mention of the European trainers, though the conditioning program Wlad was on was quite horrible (for a boxer). He worked quite well for Vitali, on the other hand. Another thing he has going for him is that he looks a bit like Mickey from Rocky: This content is protected This content is protected
They are a lot of good trainers out there but I think those who get singled out as "real masters" had a bit of luck along the way. The right kid turned up at the right time with the right attitude, giving trainer the opportunity to reach HIS potential. And one outstanding success usually spawns more success, inspires the other kids around him or attracts talent from miles around. Sure, those big name trainers deserves the praise BUT there a other old wise trainers with just as much know-how who never got the real headline-making fighters. Turning an averagely talented fighter, or a part-timer, into a good fringe contender is a heck of a feat of training, but it wont get the recognition that trainer an "all-time great" talent gets you.
Several trainers from the former German Democratic Republik (DDR) have a good reputation in Europe. Sdunek has been already mentioned. Furthermore there are Manfred Wolke (trained Henry Maske) and Ulli Wegener (Ottke, Abraham).
There are some good modern methods of training and new equiptment that was not available years ago but some of the old methods and thought of trainer was superb. The heavyweights today are the ones who suffer because there is no weight limit and muscle growth without cardio and cut is evident, except in the case of the klitschko's
Manny was only co-trainer for the first Brewster fight and he was steamed because he said Fritz and his other old trainers that were still there would only let him spar 4 high paced rounds with too much emphasis on weights, etc.
