I consider myself as a very smart person, and if I put my mind to something I feel like I can accomplish almost anything. I've worked almost every physichal attribute (power, speed, flexibility, endurance, etc), and the thing I'm realizing now is my mentality isn't where I need it to be. I work around a lot of physichal people...Wether it's lifting at my gym, and I notice even a lot of the big/ strong guys are unconfident/ have a lot of self doubt. A boxing gym whenever you'll see somebody spar, and they have so much self doubt they have throw full force at somebody whom is simply picking them apart, or a martial arts gym where my instructor (who has 35 years of experience) has to beat up on people who stand NO CHANCE to make himself feel young, and superior.
These people are all what I consider weak minded. My instructor has a student though who's my age (22) and this kid is mentally so advanced it's unbeleivable. No fear, always goes out to win, in street fighting will do whatever it takes to win, very relaxed, etc. Whenever he spars me he actually WANTS me to kick his ass. He'll tell me all my flaws against him, and even tell me how to counter his main moves, or what he's doing against me. I've never seen anybody like it, and I realize physichally I'm better than this guy (and I do great sparring against him no matter what), mentally he's years ahead of me! At 22 he says he'd rather train somebody to win something (and to be better than him) than for him to win it himself....That's quite advanced for any 22 year old to say.

How can I get what he's got? I know through experience, and things you relax, etc, but I want his mindset. What is the best way to acheive this? He's a good speaker so do I just listen to him talk, and soak up what he says, and eventually my brain takes it in as it's own? OR do I tell myself these things over and over until my mind believes it? I've seen it done with trainers...If they want there fighter to relax, they tell over and over. Eventually it gets in there brain to relax.

  2. it's all about your philosophy on how you view the world, knowledge of yourself and your everyday attitude towards improvement and progression.

Sure do. Most fighting is mental...Your willpower, using your smarts...Angles, when to throw the right punch, when to go forward, when to move back, knowing when somebodies hurt, etc. It's much like a chess game with punching. As some of these BRUTES of boxing has shown us it's not all about power.
So, figured somebody would know the quickest route to develop habits (just like boxing), and thought patterns basically. I'm sure some of the people on here train boxers, and you don't just train there body to fight, but there mind. I'm sure most pro boxers don't step in with self doubt, and think there going to lose no matter who the guy is...Just trying to figure out the best way of me getting there besides only experience.

do things that break your comfort level and keep doing them anyways. get used to being in uncomfortable situations and it'll eventually apply. that's a good start. Not sure what you do for a living but personally, boxing doesn't compare to being a firefighter/EMT. its hard to be broken mentally compared to that.

also, i think mike tyson said something like he went into the ring terrified of losing most of the time and that's part of the reason he won in such spectacular fashion. It's all about how you handle what you're feeling than what you're actually feeling at the time.

go to google, type wise sayings, and click im feeling lucky. It'll take you to a site with alot of sayings in around 100 different categories. Skim through and devote a few to memory that really speak to you and every time you find yourself in an applicable situation, refer to the saying and find strength in it and do/think what you know you should. Ive made a habit of doing this at least once a week and I am more enlightened because of it.

"A fool does finally, what a wise man does at once"

2 months ago I ran into that gem. Since putting that into action Ive: signed up for college to become a personal trainer (my dream since I was 16years old but never pursued. I just kept wishing I was one), fixed my car, got a new job that will work around school & boxing, Im doing my 3 years of late taxes :patsch and Im getting closer with the family I pushed away. You may find something there to help you become what you want to be as well.

Ive more stories about how the sayings helped me, this is just 1.

I really like that idea. Telling yourself something to remind yourself, or to believe it.
Also, pushing your comfort level is important, but a hard thing to do.

Anyways though, I took one of the most crazy approaches I've ever did, and joined a nice church. I mean I'm a believer in god, and everything so it isn't that crazy...Just never thought I'd really be dedicated to it. Plus, I'm one of those people where hypocrites get on my nerves badly (a lot of church going people) so I'm kind of a person that worships god alone.
After just one day at this church though I felt very enlightened, and can't wait to go back. The pastor also preached about exactly what I'm asking for....
He said that things don't always come overnight, and sometimes it feels like your going nowhere in life, and stuck where your at. He said some people go for years at that same spot, and that a lot of people wonder what god is doing in the meantime. He said that god is "character building" you for the next level, for the next step in your life.
He also said some people are happy where on the level there at, but god doesn't want that. He doesn't want you to be good, but to be GREAT, and always push yourself farther and farther.
Seriously one of the best speakers I've ever heard in my life, and amazing how well he can explain it to anybody, and they understand. I'm gonna really try to apply that to my life with everything (working out, boxing, day to day, etc), and I don't think you can really go wrong. Even when it seems like it's going nowhere I can say I'm being built...Kind of like a character being built on Everquest LOL

Well good job. Im not religious but I can appreciate most things religions preach. Such as trying to be a better person to yourself and the people around you, and self reflection, honesty, integrity and such. Take what you will from the church, I wouldn't buy into the heaven & hell stuff, unless thats what you choose to believe. IMHO I think heaven & hell are on this earth, you make it yourself with your actions and views. A 'sinful' person will draw toxic people and will create his/her own hell. Its hard to explain but just think about it.

Some people are hippocrits but you just have to ignore that and keep working on yourself. <--that sounds self centered but its really more like working on life, the "journey" and living it right, it has everything and nothing to do with you, its the world & lives around you that matter and how you affect them (it should always be positive). Its also what you do with it...

I had a big huge philosophical paragraph here but I got rid of it, I dont want to get too preachy.

Yeah, I understand what your saying, and respect your opinions. That's what I dislike about people...They don't respect others opinions.
Anyways, as for the heaven/ hell type thing I do believe it exists, but at any rate I think even if it wouldn't...It gives you something to look foward to, and a reason to do the best you can. It's kind of like training for a week, and then going to spar to see if you got any better. It's a goal, something to stay busy so you don't wander off, or go crazy.
I don't believe a lot of things in the bible (to much contradicts some of it), and I believe they use the bible as a way of controlling weak minded people. Beleiving this though...Even if some of it is made up I think it's a good idea because people need to be controlled, and have to follow rules. Without things like the bible there probably wouldn't be many laws, and people would do as they please. Keeps a lot of people in line.

Best of luck buddy. I hope things go right for you. It's a good sign when you actively take a role in the improvement of your life and yourself, too many people are content to just 'be'.
