    Enjoy.

Announcer Dude (Jorge Eduardo Sanchez): Here we are in the Golpe A Golpe Ring with world champions Juan Manuel Marquez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.; I’ll assume my corresponding role of the referee, so go ahead gentlemen.

JMM: Hey Julio, in your last fight you were in with Andy Lee; how was it that you knocked him out? And Andy Lee’s style complicated things for you in the first rounds; how was it that you (successfully) got more into the fight against Andy Lee? (Starts to throw a southpaw jab)

Chavez Jr: Well, I was really cautious, because he threw this (right) hook really well. That’s why I didn’t throw the jab so much, because he’s always counter-punching with that shot (throws jab, eats counter right hook.) So I kept this hand here (holds left up high, parries jab), throwing first, boom, throwing the right (throws straight right hand). And I started getting inside little by little; reading his shots, moving the waist always (slips and blocks shots), and hitting him to the body…letting him get to me a little bit, but in order to connect my hooks to the liver well. I’d hit him to the body (throws combinations downstairs), and always throwing the right by surprise; I’d make a movement (leans to his left), and bam (throws straight right down the middle). And I think the body punching was principal. The first rounds, truthfully, he kept me as you said, outside with his jab-

JMM: He was always working the distance, using speed, keeping distance so as to not let you inside. The easiest thing for him was keeping you at a distance and connecting his punches. But what did you do to get inside his guard?

Chavez Jr: With his height, I always broke to the sides, taking angles (bobs and weaves), to get him out of place and get him in the body, or I’d feint upstairs (throws punches)…

JMM: He changed directions on you a lot (moves side to side). He’d try the 1-2-hook (throws combination), so how was it you were able to get inside his guard from there?

Chavez Jr: Well, I’d always move, waiting, waiting (parries punches), waiting for his mistakes, boom, catching him upstairs (throws counter left hook), throwing the right when he came in. I think the most important thing in the fight was the patience, the bodypunching, and the pressing forward, because I knew he could only do that for 2 or 3 rounds, and his rhythm would be slowing down. So the key I think was the waist (movement) and the bodypunching.

Sanchez: Those potent hooks from Julio…

JMM: The hooks in short you were able to land…you’re there inside, throwing those powerful punches you were able to land (takes punches), hooks, uppercuts, including ones you’d throw with the same hand (twice)…

Chavez Jr: I’d get it in coming like that, boom (throws right to the body while stepping and leaning leftwards; JMM sticks out off-angle left hand), or here (motions to liver), always focusing on the body.

Sanchez: That hook, Julio, which you landed to the liver, and then would raise again with the same hand (motions into an uppercut)..?

Chavez Jr: Yes, when I go to the body, I try not to be predictable. I throw upstairs (throws right hand), downstairs (throws left hook to the body), to one side (throws left uppercut), to the other (throws right hook to the body, then left hook up top), trying to take advantage of him from the sides; there are shots that one doesn’t see from here sometimes (ducks down). I think he was too green for me on the inside. I was controlling him very well on the inside.

JMM: And now, the style of Maravilla; how do you see it? What has to be done to complicate things for him, so that he can’t connect on you easily?

Chavez Jr: Well Maravilla, if I’m southpaw (switches stance), for me he’s always stepping here (imitates Sergio’s leftward movement), feinting with his body-

JMM: And suddenly, he’ll be here, and start moving his hands like this (swings arms below the waist); what can you do so that he doesn’t suddenly lower his arms, and land those hooks that he throws with both hands (throws leaping right hook)?
Chavez Jr: The principle thing, I think, is that the punches come towards one single side. So the position of the hands can’t ever come down, can’t drop for feints. So I’d be moving, working my jab (moves upper body and jabs), keeping this hand out, because here I won’t let him (work)…(parries southpaw jab) tap, tap, boom (throws right hand).

JMM: Counterpunching him is a good idea, but at some point he’s going to want to counterpunch you as well…let’s get back to the center (laughs as they reposition their shuffling feet to center stage.) For example, he’s going to want to work with his speed, bam bam bam (throws southpaw combinations), but in the moment he wants to counter-punch you, you can counter-punch as well.

Chavez Jr: That’s right. I think that giving him…

JMM: For example, I throw…throw the straight; the straight comes out, and he’s going to want to counterpunch you (steps leftward outside of right hand straight, throws overhand left over it). So you’ve got to be…

    Sanchez: Throw and recover.

JMM: Exactly, throw and recover, with lots of speed too. I think the most important thing is here is the changing of direction.

    Chavez Jr: Yes, the angles.

JMM: When you’re here on the inside, he’s going to be using his speed and working (throws combination), and you-(Chavez pivots outside of his lead foot and throws), leave him out of position, so that you can avoid getting landed on.

    Chavez Jr: That’s right.

Sanchez: Good. Well now you’ve seen the tail (lights flash), and you know what that means; it has finished: the Ring of Golpe A Golpe.

Bogotazo, Why don't you analyse Chavez Jr. V.S. Martinez yourself? I would like to read it.

When you read about what the fighter is gonna do to his opponent, it's not neutral because he may criticize his oponent and may say that he is better than him in doing this and that (insult) in the ring which might not be true.

Me gusta Golpe a Golpe. Jr made a good explanation for not using his jab against Lee. I still don't think he has much of a jab though.

    You're welcome guys.

    :yep

That's true. In the weeks leading up to the fight, I'll probably write a break down myself after reviewing their last few fights.

Anytime. And I agree, I think that kind of talk from Chavez shows the brains behind the bull we don't always get to see because the nature of pressure fighting is action-packed.

It's funny, because in another translation I did last summer, I remember Marquez saying he should improve his infighting technique and switch up his combinations to be less predictable:

    From the fight against Rowland

Announcer Dude: The problem in this fight for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was that his punches were plainly isolated, combinations having maximum a pair of punches. No more.

JMM: Yes, what happens is that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. makes a mistake. He's the fighter with greater height. Why throw your hooks in this way (throws excessively wide)? Why not better jab, jab, and throw punches inside- and he always has this method of throwing an uppercut (right), and to go downstairs (left to the body). Why not change it? Uppercut (right), feint to the body, and change it going upstairs to a left hook to the head. Now many fighters recognize that he throws the left to the liver area, why not feint and change it to a left hook + right hand + uppercut?

Looks like he followed through on doing just that!

Huge props to ESPN and the Golpe a Golpe staff! This has to be one if not the best boxing show on network TV. I love and it's too bad that I'm working overseas and Im missing quite of bit of them....but never the less, outstanding show!
