I believe I remember him showing a solid jab against Manfredo Jr. One of the few fights where he used his height at range as opposed to a smothering tactic up close.

Yes, absolutely. This was the fight I saw the most improvement with Jr. He actually showed during this fight he can actually box on the outside. His jab and movement was much improved.

Right :good You think the counter-punching he's describing is an effective tactic (not necessarily overall but in the toolbox)?

I didn't watch the video but that's his only predicament. Does he have the lungs? The workrate to overwhelm Martinez? If he doesn't he will lose. While he was purposely patient against Lee, I think he was too patient. Lee basically got going decently and when Chavez opened up he ended the fight.

I know not directed at me, but I would say only if it's complimented with consistent pressure, which I think Chavez will do. Some of the most aggressive fighters happened to be terrific counter-punchers (While people may not immediately think of them because it's a dimension and not so much their style). Initiating and being one step ahead gives a fighter quite a bit of freedom and creativity to dictate an opponents movements and present himself with countering opportunities. This isn't necessarily a recipe with aggression. But aggression can be mentally taxing for opposition, which encourages opponents who are pressured to find the openings to counter of the aggressors aggression. Feinting, side-stepping, and jabbing with the intent to immediately slip and counter the counter are all methods Chavez (And aggressive fighters) can use to manipulate Martinez for being more of the defensive-counterer. I think Chavez plays the role as bull creatively he will have more liberty and room for error. Martinez in his role in this fight basically has to fight the more sound fight and sustain it for twelve rounds. It's really a difficult task for either fighter, but I think Martinez has to fight a better fighter to actually win.

have a feeling jcc cramps and sergio's athleticism will be the determining factor in this fight.

Excellent points...pressure itself opens opportunities for counters. The question, to me, comes down to ring generalship. Personally I feel Martinez is going to sit down on his punches instead of running as much as we might think, discouraging Chavez from throwing in high volume and disrupting his ability to feint and bait to open holes for his offense to get through. It's been a while since Sergio has fought in the pocket, but lets not forget the display of savvy infighting in both Williams fights.

Martinez thinks hes the second coming of Sweat Pea. "How are u going to fight someone you cant hit?" he will be more focused on trying to stay off the ropes, he'll eventually take a chance and attempt to fight Chavez off and pay dearly for it. I see him getting hurt, covering up while Chavez tees off and the ref waiving the fight off. Martinez gets hit too much and finds himself in a slugfest and in trouble much too often.

My 3 month avy bet awaits you. Theres also a 1 year avy bet for those of you that are real confident :smoke

That's possible, but if Martinez sits down on shots more he runs the risk of getting cracked hard himself. As he said in the faceoff, "How are you going to hit me Julio." He will be easier to hit if he sits down more. Martinez sits down quite a bit, though. What he does is best is pick his shots unpredictably. He needs to mix that sort of thing up which I think we will.

Not quite as confident about him getting stopped but I do think Martinez has deluded himself about his ability. Or perhaps worse, he's underestimating Chavez. Pavlik and Williams are in the same league as Chavez I'm afraid and while Martinez was rightfully angry at Chavez for taking so long he will prove to be a tougher task than he anticipated.

The only question for Chavez is can he keep a high enough activity. Martinez has terrific stamina. I don't know if Chavez stamina is as legendary as his pops. He drains a lot to make MW.

I simply think if Martinez tries to run the whole time, he'll get tagged and cornered and banged up. As you say Pete, I think his best bet is to mix it up between using the ring and gaining Chavez Jr.'s respect. Still unsure about a proper victor.
