:think Two American heavy prospects of the same age who size up as nearly identical in the tale of the tape, with overall comparable records and dramatically different styles. No, I don't think either is terribly special or relevant at this precise moment. We could be dealing with one or both of these guys loitering in the contention mix during the unlimited division's next incarnation (doubtful to appear much different from today's), however. And any process by which the relative men can be culled from the boys in the too-wide field of 'prospects' (likely nearly all boys) is to be welcomed; therefore a fight like this is worth mention. Who wins right now?
Walker was dominate last week in his rematch with Wilson. havent seen very much of Johnson, has some solid movement for a heavyweight and a good jab and his chins never been tested could go either way
Johnson by shutout. Walker is D level at best.. he's a shaky-chinned brawler who throws sloppy punches, has bad stamina, and he simply can't compete against any fighter with C level boxing skill or higher. Johnson could easily win the fight with his jab alone.
Why aren't Johnson's handlers putting him in with Travis Walkers and Mike Marrones on a monthly basis, I wonder? :think
Because Walker/Marrone's handlers don't want it. Johnson's handlers aren't pushing for it either.. they're probably satisfied with him outjabbing and clowning guys with losing records for another year. He's not a serious prospect either, but he's Gamboa compared to Travis Walker. Did you ever watch his fight on shobox where he was flirting with the ring card girls and talking to his opponent's wife during the fight? Johnson is funny as hell, it's too bad he's featherfisted and all around nothing special.
Against Wills, I believe? Yeah, that fight basically cemented him as cool in my book. As far as not a serious prospect...I guess that depends on how seriously you took Eddie Chambers (I know you gave him zero chance against Povetkin - I thought it would be pretty close). IMO Johnson and Chambers are very even in raw talent. And while questions have been answered (unsatisfactorily) about Chambers' heart and championship drive - they still remain wide open for the untested Johnson. Which means, in the long run, he could turn out, to the surprise of many, as actually having been more relevant all along (why Chambers got so much more hype still baffles me...they're equally slick and Johnson has shown brief flashes of the same speed, just chooses to keep it holstered most of the time for whatever reason) if the answers do come in, and are positive.
kevin johnson trains by smoking blunts to his face they dont call him the "kingpin" of asbury park for nothing
Chambers isn't a model athlete either, though, and look at the hype he got based on a quick, sharp jab.
Johnson would stick and move Walker to death. Walker would never catch him, and Johnson would never throw a punch other than a jab all night. Horrible style matchup for Walker, who is much more limited than his record makes him out to be.
I'd probably pick Johnson, Walker is a better physical talent but he isn't too bright and he is wild in there. Johnson should be able to outbox him, but I think it would be harder than the Wills fight.
Probably not. I'm not impressed by Johnson's output or effort. I'm even less impressed by Walker's technical prowess. Johnson would get beat by most top HWs unless the other guy had a bad night; Walker would get beaten by all of them, even if he had the night of his life and they had a bad night.
