my coach wants me to run 3mile 3x a week in order to stay underweight and to keep my cardio up. will it be fine to run this on a treadmill since its cold out or woud it be better to run it outside?

Put the treadmill on at least a 1% angle and you'll be fine. A flat treadmill is easier than flat ground.

Me, I'd do it outside though. I get bored after about 60 seconds on a treadmill.

don't use a treadmill - the results won't even compare. the cold weather will only build more discipline in you, so just run outside.

It depends on where you live. If it's warm enough, I'd run outside, but since where i live it's -10 to -20 below ... nobody runs outside. You'd die.

treadmill will be less impact if youre knees bother you. THey probably wont as you are young and not very heavy. Also wouldnt recommend running on the side of a street as the camber of the street (which is for rainwater) can be bad for your legs and joints. It would be better to run on a level sidewalk.

Depends where the treadmill is located. I found a treadmill that is located in a small room that is temperature controlled. I turn the heat up to 90 degrees, throw on the sauna suite or in your case the garbage bag, and run. I don't adjust the angle or run real fast. Normal speed. After 15 minutes I start sweating my balls off. Another exercise I seen used by a professional baseball player, not that I respect baseball players, but he adjusted the climb and speed to max. And was doing 100 meter sprints. You might be able to do that 10 times with thirty second rests. Of course you don't want to wear the sauna suite or garbage bag during that time because its hard work.

why would you wear a garbage bag unless youre trying to dehydrate to make weight?

I think he was saying he just wanted to run 3x a week to maintain fitness/endurance.

Exactly I had the same problem the other week and now that the tempature is dropping more its either keep running or up the layers of clothes I wear. Now I want a pair of wind breakers over a old pair of sweats,1 t-shirt with a long john overtop,a hoddie and my winter coat its big but its a nice atheltic Nike coat with plenty of room to move around in. This weather is no joke gotta be prepared also id suggest breathing through ur nose more in the cold.

i dont understand this, you ran 5 miles in 27 minutes and sprinted at the end on a treadmill?

treadmills go at one pace, when you put the speed up how do you know how far you were running?

how did you calculate the 5 miles?

if my memory serves me correctly, 5k is about 3-3.5 miles. if you ran that outside, I would say that's good (8.5-9 min pace), given that you haven't run in a while. but since you did it on a treadmill, I can't really comment.
