Quarry, the favourite great white hope, facing that character we know as Trevor' Berbick. 12 rounds of boxing.??
Prime Quarry destroys Berbick and its not even close. Berbick always came right at his opponent's slugging and that was never a good idea against Quarry. Quarry was such a great counter puncher.
Grist to Quarrys mill, nothing he liked better than squaring off with big, black ( fact ) HW who thought they could beat him, prob wouldn't go past 5/6 rounds . keep well.
I have to go with The Bellflower Bomber, Jerry Quarry, who in my estimation was a very good counterpuncher. Trevor Berbick was a durable heavyweight throughout the 1980's, whose claim to fame was his 1981 victory over the end of the road Muhammad Ali, emulating another 1980's heavyweight, Gentleman Gerry Cooney, the assaulter of the aged. Berbick, more muscular than Jerry, last up until he starts to feel the effects of Quarry's well timed bombs to the midriff. Jerry continues his bombardment until the 7th round, after decking a badly exhausted Berbick, the referee comes to the rescue, preventing Trevor from further injury.
Hugely original idea Richard Murrieta. Bravo. This would be a great brawl. I'll go with Quarry by MD. The only reason I say that is to indicate how close it would be. I don't think Quarry would beat the **** out of Berbick, yet I don't think it would be razor-thin either. Somewhere in between. I think the idea that Quarry would knock Berbick out is ridiculous though. Berbick was a solid piece of muscle that had about 30 pounds on Quarry, and was fairly tough. But I think Quarry's weight disadvantage is what keeps Berbick from getting knocked out. I don't think it has the effect on Berbick that it did on the people Quarry actually fought. The subject of durability aside a moment, consider Quarry's best wins. Floyd Patterson, Thad Spencer, Buster Mathis, Ron Lyle, Earnie Shavers. Patterson and Spencer were no more than 200 pounds. Spencer was knocked out. Mathis went the distance, although he was a lot heavier than Berbick. Lyle was the most physically like Berbick, and he lasted the distance. Shavers was the only fighter close to Berbick's weight that got knocked out. However, Shavers' chin was much weaker than Berbick's (not to say Berbick was an invincible beast). I should add that Mac Foster, a 210-fighter was knocked out, but it is hard to know just how tough he was either from film or records. Now, let's look at who Berbick lost to. I just looked at his record and all of his losses. Berbick only once lost to a guy below 215, ST Gordon, at 202 (about 10 pounds more than Quarry's average). I know Berbick could be inconsistent, but he was only knocked out twice in his career. Once by Mercado and once by Tyson. He was very green against Mercado, so it's not entirely fair to even factor that in, but Berbick only lost by KO to guys in the 220s. Tyson was the only guy to knock out a prime Berbick. So you guys are essentially saying Quarry's punching power is comparable to that of Tyson.
I don't see Trevor being flattened by Quarry, Will. He was pretty durable. I'm more inclined to think if he wins its on points after a close fight.
I hope that you too are not getting bit by the Weight Fixation Syndrome. I think that skill outdoes weight and size. I have witnessed this before, respect your opinion my friend but size does not impress me. Thanks for the compliment though
