Sports Illustrated predicted Cooney in 5 rounds not 2. Most the people that predicted Cooney to win just hated Holmes (and this was a pretty long list) Holmes didn’t want to pay the $50,000 to have a proper accounting of all the closed circuit money and Team Cooney did. This resulted in Cooney making $500,000 more gross than Holmes did. That isn’t Gerry’s fault. King also took some of Holmes purse for ‘expenses’ which Cooney didn’t have to deal with either. So yes in the end Holmes got less money but that was because he was cheap and didn’t want to come off 50k to make an extra $500k and he was with King who made a career of shorting his fighters. Plenty of King fighters have gone on the record about this over the years. All this is covered in Gerry’s book that came out last year. Cooney put most of his money from that fight in tax shelters and real estate. He lived pretty middle class for most of his career up until the Spinks fight when he bought a house in the Hamptons. He lived in a modest duplex on Long Island for years even before and after the Holmes fight.
Bet he would at least play online chess with me unlike that fraud Lewis undisputed my ass I have been disputing the sh1t out of it since he joined chess.com.
That's what made him last 15 rounds against a totally prime Larry Holmes. Of course his being "exciting" in that fight mostly amounted to him irritating the hell out of the champ, not his fighting skills.
Berbick faced and defeated better opposition, but I think Cooney's style is all wrong for him. Trevor often took some time to get rolling, and could be tagged flush, especially early. Cooney catches him cold and Trevor can't recover quickly enough to avoid losing the fight.
Well, he DID get stopped early both early and later in his career. Cooney probably hit harder than Mercado and Tyson...with the left hand.
I'm picking Berbick for this one, he'll slow Cooney down when going to the body and eventually knock him out late as he begins to tire. Just imagine a card following the Holmes - Cooney one where Holmes fights Page and Berbick fights Cooney, that would've been great.
