Both in their primes, who takes this one? Chagaev had the more polished skills when younger and healthier, but Berbick was tough and rugged and had an awkward style of his own.
Ruslan was very skilled and always utilized his southpaw stance to his advantage. The Achilles injury he suffered training for Liakhovich definitely set his career back and he probably tried to comeback too soon. Still, it took a generational talent to hand him his first defeat. I just don't see Berbick offering anything of the sort, pre or post injury.
I went with Berbick but truthfully he’d have to be in serious top form. He couldn’t afford to show up like he did against ST Gordon. When Berbick was on point he beat prime versions of Greg Page, John Tate and Pinklon Thomas. Took a peak Holmes 15 rounds too. Chagaev was a tough and crafty southpaw who was busy in the ring but he didn’t have much to hurt guys with and I’ve always felt his opposition was somewhat average…. Still it’s a close fight either way
If Chagaev could out box John Ruiz, Valuev and Felix Savon he could DEFINITELY out box Berbick. I actually think he’d stop Berbick midway through. Ruslan had very respectable power too.
I don't personally think Berbick was very good. Don't really think Chagaev was great either but he was better than Berbick. Caucasian Tyson by UD12
Good input here gentleman, thank you. A close fight to pick, we are essentially neck and neck here at this point.
Berbick lost the title to Tyson, and would lose to the white Tyson (prime vs. prime). Southpaw is something else, and Berbick is not Wlad.
