Seems Tommy the gun's son is making some waves on social media, seems like he has some potential. Any thoughts?
My thoughts are that when Tommy Morrison was as old as his son is now, Tommy had nearly 50 pro fights, he was known around the world, he was slugging it out with Ruddock and Lewis ... and his career as a top heavyweight was basically nearing its end (regardless of his positive HIV test). And if his son DID have any potential, he wouldn't just be two years into a non-descript pro career that is stuck in Oklahoma somewhere. People know fairly quickly if the sons of famous boxers are going to be top fighters themselves. It doesn't take this long. In other words, if Trey Lippe Morrison dropped the "Morrison" and just went by the name Trey Lippe ... would anyone be interested in what he's accomplished or where he's going? No. Because he hasn't accomplished anything and he isn't going anywhere.
Has the gift... Fathers left hook, and decent enough athleticism... But may have started too late. Still the verdict isn't in on him yet...
I agree 100% Why do most HW's now all seem to have late starts? I believe a boxer can have a successful career starting late, but it almost ends any possibility of being a top 10 ATG. No I guess your right, nobody would care less about him if he dropped the "Morrison", unless he really started making ground through the rankings.
I think his old mans demise inspired him to pick the gloves up.. Heavyweights have a better chance of succeeding after late starts. Just to name a few. Austin, Thompson and Wilder had late starts.. Especially Thompson and Austin who were pushing 30 when they started. Impossible to escape comparisons or get unearned attention when you're the offspring of a legend.. It is what it is. But at the same time I haven't seen anyone say this kid has a great future ahead of him. A lot of people who are big Morrison fans just enjoy watching and following the kid regardless of what his ceiling is... Because even if it's a much lower level... There's definitely some Duke there. :yep
I mean, the videos of him are readily available on Youtube. There's nothing there. He's trying to make a couple bucks off his dad's name in Oklahoma. I feel bad for Tony Holden more than anyone else. Holden is a good guy. He seems to be trying to capture something he's lost. Kind of reminds me of the documentary I saw recently on Netflix or Amazon or Showtime or one of them. The documentary is called "Well Now You're Here, There's No Way Back" about the drummer from Quiet Riot who was best friends with the former lead singer who died. And he's been trying to find a new lead singer (and best friend) ever since. (It's a good documentary, by the way.) I kind of get that same feeling from Tony Holden. I think he had the time of his life with Tommy Morrison, and now he's trying to recapture that. But it isn't working out. Certainly, there are no "gifts" evident when watching Lippe fight.
No it's not. Obviously from the look of things he won't go far, but we can't write him off completely yet.
Decent prospect.. But he isn't staying busy enough for the career stage he's in.. To give you some perspective, he's been fighting for 29 months and has only 11 pro bouts... His old man had 27 fights by the time he reached that duration and not to mention, was four years younger when he hit that marker.
It's a nice story but I don't see him going too far up the ranks. From the fights I've watched he looks slow, crude and defenseless. On the plus he does have power like his dad but he also has that weak chin.
He played some college football, his father dying most likely influenced a change in direction. What other top 10 heavyweights right now besides Fury, Parker and Haye had a relatively early start?
