You may have all seen this...but see it again.. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt6thBZI4Kg&feature=related[/ame]
As I've said before,Jimmy was a good skilled ring craftsman. I rank him number 5 in my top 10 list of 70's heavyweights. He'd have been an undisputed champion had he come along in a later era. Even some earlier ones.
I like to stick my head into one of these Jimmy Young Cult meetings now and then to see what's up. Good video, but I think Leon Spinks would have beaten him. :good
Maybe the Spinks of the first Ali fight would have outworked Jimmy in '78,as Young had faded, big time since losing his motivation after the disputed loss against Ken Norton. The Young of the Norton and Foreman fights, though, would take Spinks to school.
I like Ole Jimmers too, however, he was very innconstent... Was he a top '70s contender? YES! I still accuse him of laziness though.... He was in-shape as a heavy between 209 to 213 pounds..... Some of them fights he had at 220 is where he showed his desire to chow down at the buffet.... MR.BILL:hatadmin
Leon Spinks? Man. I know you're kidding..you have a good sense of humor..I know that you know that Young would have made poor Leon look so foolish that Leon, despite being as simple minded as he was, would have donned one of Floyd Patterson's post-Liston beard disguises to hide his shame afterwards.:smoke
Speaking of Leon Stinks.... The way the IBHOF is allowing every Tom, Dick and Harry in the door, why the hell not shoe in Leon.?.?.? atsch:think:scaredas::yep:deal MR.BILL:bbb
Yeah, why not? I'm also leaning towards Tony Tubbs as well..and I'm glad he's not leaning towards me, BTW..
yeah, maybe. I think Leon Spinks did better against a shitty version of Ali than Jimmy Young did though. :yep
They threw him in with the Lions in the ring and in sparring and he learned how to survive and thrive. I only wish he would have stayed in condition and fought on in condition. He was subject to some poor judging in his career but the powers that be wanted him outed. One of the best defensive fighters ever at heavyweight and a spoiler indeed. Thanks RC
:good..Bummy, Young wasn't appreciated at all by the movers and shakers of boxing IMO..he was a nuisance to them I believe..a sort of wish they all had that he'd just go away..and I'm sure that Ali...even if he was better trained and prepared, wouldn't want to fight Young again. It must have been hard for Jimmy to fight both the opponent AND the judges. The Norton fight was a blatant robbery, and I bet everyone in the sport was glad that he kind of lost interest and got out of shape after Norton.
that norton-young was a clear robbery..i remember norton looking defeated as anything..hell he even said it himself he thought he lost...jimmy had one more career surge in 1981 but after that he became a career opponent
Yes,but the shitty version of Ali that Spinks fought was shittier than the shitty version that Young fought !
I sometimes think that Jimmy would have had more widespread appreciation if he'd been a fighter of a lighter weight. Some don't like the heavies unless they're bangers. Even the great Muhammad's style was criticised during his early years. Strange.
