It would have been a really close, interesting fight, but Young would have neutralized Holyfield...but whether Young would have gotten the decision is another question.

That's about right. Bowe would have been made for Jimmy,I think. A fat old Tony Tubbs gave a prime Riddick fits in their bout. Just think what a prime Young would have done.

    oh come on :patsch

I think Holyfield takes this by ugly decision. Young would have neutralized a lot of Holyfield's offense but in the end young just didn't have the power to make holy respect him.

Young obviously has his moments and would steal some rounds but I think Holy is on a higher level..

Jimmy Young wasn't much more than a journeyman contender, with good defensive skills, who stunk the joint out often. I think it's genuinely funny that there's a section of this forum that tries to push him as an ATG. I've seen him listed in top 20 heavyweights ever recently.
I take it in good humour.
Forgive me my rudeness for bringing my views of Jimmy Young to a "Jimmy Young thread", and try to take it in good humour too.
    :good

This thread's been done before, several times.

I'm being a bit provocative maybe, but think "trolling" is different. Then again, "trolling" seems to be an accusation thrown around all the time these days.

Ali was just as bad againt Young as he was against Leon.
Maybe Young was robbed, but his performance against a whopping 230-pound untrained Ali was not at all impressive. That was his big chance and the championship and he failed to convince.
At least Spinks fought a more inspired fight. Anyway, no one's ever claim Leon Spinks an all time great. Isn't about time Leon got himself a few tribute videos and a ESB classic following too ?

Only because that suits the Jimmy Young-boosting agenda.
Truth is, Ali was just as bad against Young, fatter, and just awful.

Nope. At least Ali danced more against Young. against spinks he was much worse, and had been through more fights. It's clear. Ali against Young was far worse. nice try.

Lyle and Shavers were journeymen contenders too.
Young didn't "school" Shavers OR Ali.
Young's win over Foreman is his only real claim to fame.

There's no way Young deserves in the top 20 all-time heavyweights.

OK. But according to you, Young "schooling" someone means nicking a close decision, losing on a disputed one, or getting off the deck to scrape a draw.

Ali was absolutely AWFUL against Young. Horrendous, untrained, fat as a hog.
You really want to split hairs over him being better or worse than against Leon ?
I think he was just as shitty in both fights. And the point is, he was shitty. And Young still managed to stink the joint out as bad as Ali did.

    Fair enough.
Defensive stylist who liked to repeatedly duck his head through the ropes against an awful out-of-shape champion.
That's a stinky way to fight for a championship. That's an awful "style".

They weren't journeymen. that's totally bull****. They were very good contenders. Clearly you haven't researched the second shavers fight, or analyzed the ali fight.

    that's your opinion.

Nope. Wrong. that's not what it is at all. That knockdown in the second shavers fight is the only thing he did the whole bout. Most of it was controlled by young.

Clearly he wasn't even close to his peak form. I don't need to mention that. But the combined factors of age, the war with shavers, and others makes it clear that Ali was better against young then he was against Spinks.

OH really? well you like to bring up Spinks in this thread for no reason, basically trying to disrespect young, but failing at it.
Spinks' only claim to fame is beating up a worse Ali then Young did.
Really, this is all your opinion. maybe Young didn't fight as aggresively as you wanted him to, but he still did more then Ali did.
People loved Ali too much to see him get owned by Young. that's why Young didn't get the title from Ali.

I haven't got Bowe ranked too highly..he was ok against a guy who he had no trouble finding...and yes Tubbs gave him all he could handle. Tubbs was a poor man's Jimmy Young..he dosen't compare basically, so you can deduce how Bowe would have fared vs Young. I think it would have resembled aspects of both the Foreman and Lyle bouts. I have no doubt that another "W" by decision would have added to Young's record.

As for Young "sticking his head through the ropes" as a defensive ploy..if the same tactic was used by Ali, it would have praised as "creative defense", just as constant holding ala the second Spinks bout was considered ok just because Ali was doing it.

My definition of journeyman is probably different to yours.
Journeyman isn't an insult. It's a clear step below a championship calibre fighter though.

    I'll admit I haven't see the Shavers-Young fight. Have you ?

I do know that Shavers was coming off a 10-round decision loss to Bob Stallings just 3 weeks earlier, and had been beaten in 1 round by Quarry less than a year earlier.
Beating a guy who's just been beaten and floored by Bob Stallings is not particularly impressive.

    No, that's just your opinion.
If you want top split the hairs and claim it as a significant "fact" then carry on. I'm not interested. Ali was utter **** against Young, that's the point.

Well, if I failed to "disrespect" Young, why are you so bothered by what I wrote ?

My aim isn't to disrespect any fighter. I'm just offering an alternative opinion. Young deserves respect, but I'm not going to say I think he was anywhere near as good as some here are making him out to be.

    Maybe.
Maybe Young's negative performance and repeated use of ducking outside the ring didn't help his case with the jusdges either.

Look, if you're completely "schooling" a guy why the need to resort to such negative (and illegal) tactics ?

Not by me, it wouldn't be.
Ali stunks the place out loads in the 1970s especially.

Look, putting your head outside the ring is an appalling way to "fight", obviously. Where are we going to draw the line ... are we going to let them stick the whole torso out, and one leg ? Or let them climb out of the ring to catch a rest ? In the name of "creative defense" ? :D

Leon Spinks had one good night against an old Ali who barely trained... he still barely won.

Young actually had several good nights. From April of 1973 to June of 1979 a case can be made that Young did not lose a fight. He actually went 16-4-2 (6) during this time. He beat R. Dunn, beat J.L. Garcia, drew with Shavers (who he had lost to in their first fight, LKOby3), beat Lyle x2, beat J. Roman, lost a close fight to Ali that many felt he won, beat Foreman (even dropped him), lost a split-decision to Norton, and lost 2 close fights to Ocasio.

I'd pick Young over Leon Spinks.
