Trinidad & Gomez to support Juanma in Vegas..............

When Juan Manuel Lopez sets foot inside of the squared circle on November 6th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, he will be facing one of the most dangerous tests in his career in the form of past titleholder Rafael Marquez. With every fight, Lopez is not only defending his WBO featherweight crown but also carrying the rich tradition of Puerto Rican boxing into the ring with him.
With that said it must be comforting for the 27-year old to know that he will have two of his most decorated countrymen with him during the weekend of his bout as living legends Felix ‘Tito’ Trinidad and Wilfredo ‘Bazooka’ Gomez will be by his side to show their support. Trinidad and Gomez will be in Las Vegas for the Lopez-Marquez weigh in as well as walking him to the ring for the bout itself, reports Jhonny Gonzalez at ***********.com.
Born in Cupey Alto, Puerto Rico, Trinidad amassed a 42-3 record with 35 knockouts while winning titles in three separate weight classes. Around the turn of the century he was one of the most popular fighters in the sport and the love and support he received from the natives on his island was a sight to behold.
Whenever Trinidad would fight in Madison Square Garden it would be a raucous event but he also had some of his most notable bouts in the Vegas area, including his September 1999 decision over Oscar De La Hoya and his December 2000 12th round stoppage over brave Fernando Vargas in one of the year’s best fights. Trinidad also suffered a whitewash decision to Winky Wright inside of the MGM Grand in May of 2005 before taking a brief retirement from the sport.
Gomez won titles between 122 and 130 pounds and was known best for his battles with the likes of Carlos Zarate, Salvador Sanchez, and Azumah Nelson amongst others. He was a tremendous puncher who captured 42 knockouts in 48 professional fights. He was outgunned against Sanchez and Nelson in TKO losses but carved out an incredible career nonetheless.
As for Lopez, his bout with Marquez is a very dangerous one. Despite the Mexico City fighter’s advanced age of 35, he is reportedly in tremendous shape for this fight and has always shown himself as a fighter who will either check your chin or go out on his own shield, as evidenced by his thrilling battles with Israel Vazquez.
A win by Lopez will certainly go a long way towards endearing himself to his country much in the same way that Trinidad and Gomez did.
